Etsuko Satoda

Age shows in Satoda's sunken yellow eyes, which stay closed more often than not. An elderly woman of ordinary height and build, she keeps her medium black hair pinned with a clip and accessorizes with round white earrings, a pearl necklace, and a ring on her right index finger. Her wardrobe leans toward a lilac jacket patterned in dark purple over a white ankle-length blouse with puffed yellow sleeves and red floral prints, finished with a grey-blue skirt, long striped yellow socks, and black sandals. Images from her younger years show a sharper face, messy hair bound in a single braid, and a black jacket.

Polite and even-tempered, Satoda teaches with a casual, matter-of-fact manner and enjoys needling those she faces. She speaks bluntly, warning Shin Asakura and Akira Akao how hard the database is to reach and how perilous tangling with Slur can be, yet she plays fair, handing Shin an Assassin Slip and pledging a clue if he can land a single strike on her. A stern streak runs alongside the warmth; she scolds Shin for wielding a dangerous prototype and once threatened to break the arms of Sakamoto and Nagumo for brawling. As an educator she genuinely cares, offering the students personalized notes after their bout, praising their teamwork, and weeping with pride at their growth, and she refuses to see her pupils die even as she trains them to kill. She holds that composure to the very end, staying calm and courteous while facing death or defending her students against Kanaguri, and she looks back fondly on Sakamoto, Rion Akao, and Nagumo, teasing them as her three fools.

Satoda came up through the JCC herself, a classmate of Byodo, and the two were the only survivors of their entire class. As a working assassin she earned a reputation as nearly untouchable, a full-fledged killer and Aikido master who Natsuki Seba said returned unharmed from every job she took. At one point the Order invited her to join, but she declined, choosing instead to teach at the school, where her pupils included Sakamoto, Rion Akao, and Nagumo until they were expelled. Years later, during the JCC Infiltration Arc, she crossed paths again with Shin after he enrolled hunting the database, which she revealed to be none other than her old classmate Byodo; she challenged him to touch her once within a day in exchange for a hint. Even in retirement her skill held; she manhandled Shin and Akira, and only the combined push of Akira, Natsuki, and Shin with a powerful prototype could graze her without doing harm. Her speed and reflexes let her block or slip every strike without looking, and she matched Kanaguri, an active Order member, blinking in front of him to cut at his throat again and again. Her strength was just as startling: she once restrained both Sakamoto and Nagumo with one hand as students, threw pupils through walls across a gymnasium, and even weakened she drove a knife through Kanaguri's camera and into his eye. She weathered a near-fatal slash to the neck and kept fighting after losing an eye, still smiling, and her Aikido let her redirect or cancel attacks with almost no effort, bent from a defensive art into a lethal one. She also sensed Natsuki despite his invisibility suit and read Akira's path ability. When Kanaguri fatally wounded her, Satoda's devotion outlasted her life; her body moved on its own after death to shield Sakamoto and the others. Her weapon of choice was a tanto, which she turned on Kanaguri.
