Summary

Uzuki waits at the spot his target is due to pass, wrestling with his conscience and doubting he can go through with the kill Asaki demanded. Elsewhere, Rion notices her escort route straying from plan; the driver blames the client's orders and reminds her to handle any attackers. Sensing a trap, she tells him to stop just as the front tire bursts. She sends the driver and client to flee and leaps out to face the ambusher, whose blinding speed forces her onto the defensive and flings her through a wall. Recognizing the blade-whip mid-fight, she kicks the attacker's hood off and sees Uzuki. Her hesitation gives him the opening to run her through.

As Rion falls, her hood slips away and Uzuki finally sees her face. Horrified, he cradles her, crying out to know why she was his target, while she spends her last breath telling him she wanted to protect him and his companions so that kind people could stay kind. Asaki emerges from the shadows to declare Uzuki has no right to grieve, that his own choices brought this, and that he can never escape Asaki's world. Frozen and facing away from her body, Uzuki is approached from behind by Sakamoto.

Uzuki then narrates the aftermath: his situs inversus condition let him survive an otherwise lethal bullet. Crawling back into public view, blood-soaked and stared at, he thinks only of Rion and rages at why the kind died while cruel people like him, Asaki, and the onlookers lived. In that moment he discards any care for the world. Returning to Al-Kamar, he beheads the greeting receptionist, triggers the alarm, and cuts down thirty-four people across the facility before opening a door to find his friends safe, then leaves with them to destroy everything.

Notes

Titled Karma (Gō), this is the one hundred seventy-fifth chapter of the JAA Jail Arc. It ran in issue 34 of 2024 on July 22, 2024, and is collected in Volume 20. A noted discrepancy: an earlier newspaper report cited thirty-two deaths in the orphanage attack, while this chapter depicts Uzuki killing thirty-four, a gap the series has not explained.
