Imperial Scholars Mixer Arc

The Imperial Scholars Mixer Arc is the ninth story arc of SPY x FAMILY, spanning chapters 36 through 42 (volumes 6 and 7). Its anime adaptation straddles two seasons, from the B part of episode 24 through the A part of episode 29. The fan-made title sits between the Campbelldon Tennis Arc and the Cruise Adventure Arc.

The mixer itself is Eden's semi-annual gathering, open only to Imperial Scholars, to their parents, and to a handful of invited alumni, attended by Ostania's elite and guarded accordingly. For Damian it is a rare chance to see his distant father; for Twilight it is the opening Operation Strix has waited for since the mission began.

Before the main event, Becky misreads Anya's mission worries as a crush on Damian and whisks her off on a shopping trip, chaperoned by the maid Martha. Anya, overwhelmed by the luxury store, buys the one thing that speaks to her: a pair of matching sheep keychains, one for each girl, to commemorate her first outing with a friend. Damian notices the trinkets on their bags at school and cannot look away.

Security around the mixer is ferocious: SSS agents, soldiers, and a venue inside the fortified Tower of Wisdom. Twilight slips onto campus disguised as a professor but concludes his only viable play is to meet Donovan openly, as "Loid Forger." Damian, meanwhile, has asked his older brother Demetrius to arrange a moment with their father after the event, then nearly loses his nerve when he grasps just how important Donovan is. Anya, who has read his plans, shames and goads him into following through.

Loid manufactures his opening by planting a copy of Anya's keychain near Damian's group and pretending to search for it. Introductions made and the punch from orientation formally apologized for, Donovan appears with his wall of bodyguards and grants Loid a conversation. The former prime minister's worldview is bleak: even blood relatives are strangers, and human beings can never truly understand each other. Loid counters that closing that distance, however imperfectly, is the whole point, and flatters him with praise of Damian's school report on his father's party. Donovan remembers his name and calls the talk enjoyable, and the two part exchanging courteous words and guarded stares. Emboldened by Loid and Anya alike, Damian then manages to tell his father about his life at school, receiving faint praise and an instruction not to disgrace the family name, which he treats like a medal. At a WISE safehouse, Sylvia refuses a rookie's suggestion to send Twilight backup, calling Eden the front line of the cold war.

The back half of the arc strings together aftermath episodes. Henderson punishes Damian, Emile, and Ewen for goofing off by sending them on a field trip with the groundskeeper Mr. Green, which turns shallow-water panic, worm-baited fishing, and the starlit surface of Stella Lake into an accidental lesson about rest. Bond runs away from a dinner of Yor's cooking that his visions paint as fatal and ends up assisting Loid's infiltration of Born Industries to steal the truth serum Gerrulimus. Yuri exhaustively surveils the seditious journalist Franklin Perkin, arrests him and his publishers, then quietly applies for financial aid for the man's father. Finally, the "Pastry of Knowledge" rumor sparks an Old Maid showdown over Imperial-Scholar macarons, in which Anya first wins by telepathy, then deliberately loses to deflect suspicion, and is saved when Damian, unnerved by her tears, draws the joker on purpose. Her quiz scores stay abysmal regardless, except for a near-pass in Classical Language that leaves Loid puzzling over her origins.

Donovan Desmond's first physical appearance and his first exchange with Loid mark the biggest advance for Operation Strix since Anya's enrollment. Loid comes away with a read on the man's philosophy, the faces of his security detail, and confirmation that Plan B improves the closer father and son become, intelligence he carries straight to headquarters.

The arc also introduces Martha Marriott, gives Demetrius his first voice appearance and Melinda her first shadowed cameo, and plants the mystery of Anya's familiarity with Classical Language, a clue to her past that the series leaves deliberately unresolved.
