Benedict Ivan Goodfellow

Age has carved Goodfellow's face into a gaunt map of wrinkles, with hatched lines scored across his forehead and cheeks. He is bald, with a thin, pointed nose, a narrow mouth, and brown eyes sunk beneath heavy lids.

For ceremonies he dons full academic regalia: a black mortarboard whose yellow tassel hangs to the right, a dark scholar's robe over a white collared shirt, and a gold-trimmed stole displaying the Eden Academy crest on each side of the chest, rendered deep red in the anime and yellow in colored manga art. On ordinary days he settles for a dark open-front jacket or cardigan over a high-collared button-up, finished with dark pants and shoes.

Goodfellow's reputation rests on incorruptibility; Eden's own teachers remark that bribery simply does not work on him. He leads with composure and method, refusing to draw conclusions before the facts are in and shutting down accusations that have no bearing on the matter at hand, as when a young teacher tries to weaponize Henderson's old arrest.

He also takes the academy's ideals seriously. Once the truth behind the scandal surfaces, he clears the accused housemaster personally and steers the faculty toward institutional reform rather than letting the affair quietly fade.

Goodfellow inherited Eden Academy's top post from Murdoch Swan's father. He first enters the story indirectly, during the Forger family's admissions interview, when Anya is challenged to recite his full name after Loid claims she hopes to one day hold his position. He goes on to deliver the welcome address at the entrance ceremony for Anya's class, and teachers invoke his integrity when discussing parents who angle for better grades.

His defining role arrives in the Eden Scandal, when Henderson is accused of trading exam questions for bribes. Goodfellow oversees the investigation himself: he has Henderson open his personal safe, keeps the faculty orderly when the stored exams turn up missing, convenes the storage-room staff and examination committee for a formal inquiry, and directs everyone to keep rumors from spreading among students. After Swan is exposed for manufacturing the scandal as part of a corrupt admissions scheme, Goodfellow formally absolves Henderson, apologizes, and asks for his help as the school enters a period of reform. Anya, for her part, never quite manages his name, mangling it as "Benerdick I'm-a-Good-Fellow" at her interview and later as "Benjerpoop Peeface" at the end-of-term gala.
