Damian Desmond

Damian takes after his mother Melinda around the eyes: hazel, narrowed, and drooping slightly, framed by long lower lashes beneath short, thin brows. His skin is light, and his short hair reads dark brown or nearly blackish in the manga while the anime periodically tints it green. A condescending look usually occupies his face, though Anya's imagination redraws him with goofy, wide round eyes. He stands 110 cm tall.

School days mean the Eden Academy uniform, worn with vertically striped socks and black shoes. Off campus he favors a white vest stamped with a golden "D" on the upper left over a long-sleeved buttoned shirt in light blue or dark purple, dark pants, and brown shoes, keeping the striped socks throughout.

Arrogance is Damian's opening act. Growing up inside Ostania's most influential family taught him to expect admiration, so he boasts about his lineage and ambitions, once preferred being addressed as "Lord Damian," and writes off classmates like Anya as peasants beneath his station. Pride makes vulnerability unbearable; he struggles to admit fault, embarrassment, or emotion, papering over his insecurities with bravado until his actions routinely contradict his words.

Underneath sits a bright, hardworking student chasing one prize above all: recognition from his father, Donovan, whom he idolizes despite their distance. Believing academic glory is the way to be seen, he grinds toward Imperial Scholar status well beyond what any six-year-old should shoulder. The effort is not pure calculation, since he genuinely loves studying, history most of all, and reads historical works for pleasure, but the standard he sets exhausts him and failure to live up to the Desmond name leaves him bitterly frustrated.

Given room to simply be a child, he plays games and mounts little expeditions with Ewen Egeburg and Emile Elman, whose loyalty steadies him; he quietly counts the pair as his closest friends. His decency keeps surfacing in deeds: defending Anya's Stella Star against cheating rumors, sympathizing with George Glooman, taking a dodgeball hit to shield Anya, trying to own up over the handkerchief incident, hauling her clear of the old schoolhouse, volunteering himself as carrier of her bomb when the Red Circus hijacks the bus, and refusing Murdoch Swan's offer of unearned Stella Stars on principle.

He is also deeply sensitive. Praise, personal questions, or anything brushing against his crush on Anya, sparked by their very first confrontation, triggers denial, insults, and dismissiveness, even as he keeps helping, protecting, and showing off for her and turns visibly jealous when other boys draw her attention. At his core he is an insecure boy who privately suspects his family considers him a failure, treasures the smallest signs of his parents' attention, keeps reaching for his indifferent older brother Demetrius, and gradually starts questioning whether achievement alone can buy the acceptance he actually wants.

Damian enters Eden Academy as a first-year in Cecile Hall's Class 3, boarding in the dormitory with Emile and Ewen while the butler Jeeves tends his German shepherd Max back home. WISE's Operation Strix marks him as the key to its fallback Plan B: with his reclusive father almost never seen in public, a friendship with Damian could crack open access to the Desmond family, which drives Anya's repeated overtures. She has even admitted her telepathy to him, the only person she has told, and he brushed it off as cartoon-addled nonsense.

His Eden record builds steadily. Scoring 94 in the History midterm, second best in his grade, earns his first Stella Star; courage during the bus hijacking brings a second; the top History mark in the term finals secures a third; and standing up for Henry Henderson against false bribery accusations while helping expose Swan's illegal admissions dealings yields a fourth. Language studies remain his weak point, and a poor finals showing lands him in the low-ranked Class F beside Anya for the next term. Among his self-styled special moves are the Desmond-Style Rolling Sweep, a spinning cleaning technique, and the dream-forged Paradise Fist he created with his friends to make peace with his jealousy.

On the production side, Tatsuya Endo had not yet conceived Damian when the manga's first two chapters were drafted. Early sketches gave the boy curly hair, an ascot, and a face resembling Donovan's before the editor rejected them, and the character owes inspiration to Domyoji of Boys Over Flowers. Endo initially imagined him meaner and mellowed him as the series went on. Anya's nickname for him, "Sy-on Boy," mangles the word scion, appearing in Japanese as "Jinan," meaning second son.
