The hair on his head, equally white and straight, is drawn into a tight ponytail ending just below the shoulders, retreating noticeably at the front. Thin brows, small narrow eyes, and deep facial creases mark his sixty-six years, and a monocle sits over his left eye above an expression that defaults to stern, though witnessing true elegance can shatter the mask.

He typically dresses in a three-piece suit whose jacket trails long coattails over striped trousers, accented by a tricolor striped tie, a pocket square, and a cane. During his youth his hair was dirty blond, grown steadily longer through his teens and twenties; he cropped it short after a wartime imprisonment, the same period the monocle began covering his injured left eye.

Elegance, in Henry's vocabulary, means dignity and conduct under pressure rather than fine clothes. He corrects inelegant behavior wherever he finds it, held his composure when Loid Forger smashed an interview table, and answered Murdoch Swan's attempt at intimidation with a punch thrown in defense of the Forger family's integrity and his own honor. Even as a teenager his peers knew him for the obsession.

Composure has limits. A misunderstood lesson can leave him silently cursing, the Forgers' absurd over-preparation for his entrance-exam trials left him simultaneously delighted and terrified, and he sulked with jealousy upon learning two of his own students had taken their troubles to Mr. Green instead of him. Still, discipline anchors him: he keeps a strict daily routine, helps administer the school, and holds that children need warmth and joy alongside structure to grow properly.

His teaching philosophy centers on the human element beneath history, in his view the only thing that makes the subject intelligible at all, and he treats the discipline as a tool for keeping humanity from repeating its worst hours. In the present he teaches history, runs Cecile Hall as housemaster, covers for absent colleagues, and stays remarkably fit through morning jogs. When forged evidence framed him for trading test answers for bribes, he resigned quietly rather than stain Eden's name, privately admitting to Donna Schlag a weariness built over decades; she condemned the retreat as cowardice. His students refused to let him go. Anya Forger, Becky Blackbell, and Damian Desmond risked severe punishment to expose the plot behind his framing, Swan's admissions racket collapsed under investigation, and a deeply moved Henry rescinded his resignation, vowing to keep teaching at least until the children complete their elementary education.
