Shaggy white hair spilling to his waist marks the Shopkeeper out immediately, framing a tan, middle-aged face with sunken black eyes of an almond shape. Tending his flowers, he dresses the part of a laborer: a beige long-sleeved shirt with the sleeves rolled, matching pants, and a black apron with gloves and boots, all topped by a brown hat whose red string carries two small golden spike figurines, ornaments that echo the earrings and needle weapons Yor Forger uses.

Away from the garden he switches to a light coat with a dark belt and boots beneath a cape, again fastened by spike-tipped golden cords, and gathers the upper half of his hair back with bobby pins crossed in an X.

Serene, courteous, and rarely without a soft smile, the Shopkeeper delivers even his death threats politely. His worldview fuses gardening with killing: society, like a flowerbed, flourishes only when someone waters, prunes, and removes what harms it. He calls his assassins "pruners" and teaches them that their work is honorable service to Ostania, comparable to a soldier's devotion to the homeland.

His loyalty runs to the nation's old soul rather than its current rulers. He reveres the legacy of the Miteran Empire and its sacred elk, brushes aside politically motivated contracts, and pointedly reminds SSS Director Wyman Wilker that Garden serves the country itself, not its politicians. He warns Yor to stay cautious around political figures like Melinda Desmond even while permitting the friendship, and he takes quiet interest when Loid Forger crosses paths with Donovan Desmond.

Beneath the composure sits a demanding evaluator. He once lunges at Yor mid-conversation with garden shears simply to check whether family life has dulled her edge, then recounts the test to Hemlock with amusement, and he threatens to take Wilker's head along with his cigar if the director smokes on his grounds. Yet he is not heartless: he grants Yor time for personal matters, helps mend her rift with Hemlock, and frets over the aging Matthew McMahon's eventual retirement while planning for Garden's next generation.

Direct displays of the Shopkeeper's skill are rare, but the evidence points to a formidable fighter. Wielding an enormous pair of garden shears, he moves fast and precisely enough to catch Yor, one of Garden's deadliest members, briefly off guard. He is also the teacher who raised her from childhood into the Thorn Princess, which implies mastery of combat, survival craft, and assassination technique in his own right.

As Garden's head he screens every assignment against the organization's ideals and interests, commands the loyalty and respect of its killers, and intimidates even senior state officials. His gentler expertise is genuine as well: he keeps an expansive, meticulously managed garden full of flowers and plants, and grows grapes at his estate for vintage wine.
