Snidel

Snidel is a stocky older man with slicked-back brown hair of medium length, marked by two blond streaks that run down the left side and curl toward the back of his skull. A full beard, sharp brows, and pale blue eyes finish the face. He wears the regiment's uniform under a dark green military greatcoat, lined in red and hung over his shoulders.

An air of nobility mixed with cold menace surrounds him. He is a committed gourmand as well, forever carrying cooking implements: a napkin knotted at his throat, seasonings clipped to his belt, and a cane shaped like a cooking stirrer.

Snidel is cruel and merciless, ready to do whatever his goal demands, up to trying to murder young Anya to recover the microfilm she swallows. His subordinates respect his forceful leadership, yet he thinks nothing of threatening or killing them should they obstruct him, and he throws his military rank around against the people of Frigis, as when he bullies the family-only restaurant Rubble and Bonds into serving him.

Supremely self-assured, he never doubts his war plan will work. Even as the Forgers wreck things aboard Enormity, he keeps his composure and directs his men to contain the damage, though the news of Anya eating the microfilm, the sight of Yor sprinting along the hull, and Loid impersonating him each rattle him. A refined food connoisseur, he respects rivals like Loid but loves flaunting his palate by challenging them to contests he is sure of winning. His senses are extraordinary: a single breath lets him catalogue the dishes in a room, and he unmasks Loid's disguise simply by catching his city scent. He is a capable hand-to-hand fighter and skilled with firearms and explosives, and he and his men even cook up a toxic gas they name Type G, though in close combat Loid ultimately bests him.

Bent on reigniting the East-West war, Snidel conspires with the Republic of Albo and has his regiment ready the battle airship Enormity at their Frigis base. The linchpin is a microfilm stolen from the West and hidden in a truffle, which his men Domitri and Luca are to smuggle in. Before the airship is set, Snidel takes his soldiers to dine at Rubble and Bonds, overriding its family-only rule, seizing Anya's untouched slice of meremere, and out-answering Loid in a sugar-identifying contest for it by naming the exact grams used.

That night at the hangar he shoots his operations manager dead, exposing the man as a WISE mole, only to hear from Domitri and Luca that Anya has eaten the microfilm. He halts the departure and orders Frigis searched; once the girl is caught and brought aboard, he waits for her to pass the film, then, losing patience, tells the pair to open her up. When Loid's aircraft harasses Enormity, Snidel orders it downed and looses homing missiles, insisting a war is coming regardless. Loid crashes into the hull, Yor appears running across the exterior, and a soldier's grenade sparks a fire inside; Snidel sends his mechanical soldier Type F after the intruder.

With Anya recaptured, Snidel resolves to open her up himself and sends Domitri and Luca into the sewage tank. When Loid slips onto the bridge disguised as an officer, Snidel exposes him by scent and starts a shootout, then reaches for a poison-gas grenade he has been developing, Type G. Anya's telepathy foils the plan; freeing herself, she opens the bridge windows and vents the gas. Loid then disguises himself as Snidel to freeze the soldiers' fire, overpowers the colonel in a knife struggle, and chokes him unconscious. Loid has the men carry the real Snidel off as they abandon ship, and his fate stays a mystery once the Forgers plunge Enormity into Frigis Lake. Notably, he is the only villain in the series to see Twilight's face in action, yet never grasps that Loid is the spy.
