The Director

Reflective lenses hide the narrow black eyes of this tall, elderly operative. He keeps gray hair cropped short and parted at the center and dresses exactly like the bureaucrat he publicly claims to be, a dark gray business suit and deep teal tie over a white shirt, with a silver band on his left ring finger. His younger self wore the same style over dark hair.

Quiet, stoic, and blunt to the point of severity, the Director treats assassination as ordinary work, holding his composure through lethal situations and registering little beyond mild exasperation when Yor leaves him an especially messy scene to scrub. He prizes accuracy and history, once rebuking Millie Myers for pinning the Second East-West War on Donovan Desmond without knowing the facts, and he demands the same focus he practices, warning Yor mid-mission that stray emotions get people killed.

Pride in serving Ostania anchors him; he intends to keep working for the Garden as long as it will have him, war or peace, while fully aware outsiders would call the work dirty. The harshness conceals genuine care. He grants Yor small kindnesses like a final cruise day with her family, and his devotion to his wife Maureen, who knows nothing of his true occupation, drives him to come home safe from every job while quietly hoping she would stay even if she learned the truth. A survivor of both East-West wars, he regards violence as grim necessity and holds special contempt for anyone who profits from conflict.

An Eden Academy alumnus who lived through both wars of unification, Matthew McMahon built parallel careers: policy chief at Berlint City Hall in public, veteran killer for the Garden in secret, answering to the Shopkeeper. Uniquely among Garden operatives he carries no codename, working under his own name; the Director title flows from his municipal office, where he also supervises Yor's clerical cover.

Aboard the Princess Lorelei he serves as Yor's senior partner protecting Olka Gretcher, hurling corpses overboard one-handed, sniping three enemies before any could react, and shooting the assassins' leader in time to save Yor despite his own injuries. He later leads the mission against poachers in Ostania's southwestern forest, scouting through his trained falcon Keekee, keeping the volatile Hemlock in line with threats of a report to the Shopkeeper, and afterward overseeing Hemlock's temporary city hall posting meant to build the man's social skills. Along the way he counsels Yor on her own marriage, telling her that half-hearted commitment only causes harm.
