Episode 49

Exposed as the fake Winston, Loid blows the park fountain with pre-set charges, scatters the SSS through hidden rope snares, and misdirects the survivors with a disguise of an injured Yuri claiming Twilight fled east. The genuine Yuri, spotting a footprint that matches his own tread in ground he has never walked, deduces the spy went into the sewers and descends alone while exits are sealed. Below, the disguised Loid ambushes him, and the mirror-image duel turns from gunfire, which costs Loid a bullet in the arm and Yuri his weapon, into brutal close combat. Yuri's absurd durability wears the spy down until a pipe strike finally drops him. As Loid readies a finishing blow, the delirious Yuri murmurs an apology to Yor, and Loid, shaken, leaves him alive and vanishes deeper underground. Yuri later wakes in Chloe's care, mistakes her for his sister, earns a smack, and is walked out wondering why Twilight showed him mercy.

At the Shellbury Hotel, the real Wheeler never shows, so a WISE agent dons a Loid-made disguise of Gascoigne, the SSS officer running the meet, to lure him out. Winston smells interference, tails the impostor, and slips a staged car accident meant to flush out watchers, but Fiona spots how he reads window reflections and runs him down with Red 4's help, stripping the stolen files from his person. Refusing to bargain since the man has plainly memorized everything, she holds firm even when he takes Red 4 hostage, coolly stating that dying is part of their trade. Winston hurls the hostage at her, spikes her gun barrel with a thrown knife, and drops into the sewers with Fiona in pursuit, her resolve sharpened by a fantasy of surviving to replace Yor in Operation Strix.

Underground, Winston intercepts the wounded Loid, sees through the Yuri disguise, and vows to unmask Twilight and hand his face to the SSS. Their fight ends with Loid beaten, and Winston reaching for the mask just as Fiona arrives and pins his hand under a furious stomp. When he threatens to kill Loid and lectures her that attachments make spies weak, Fiona answers with a reckless all-out assault. Her sudden acceleration breaks Winston's read of her movements, and she flattens him with a single decisive punch, shattering her own right arm in the process yet never dropping her glare.

Loid and Yuri fight each other at length for the first time, neither knowing the other's identity, and Yuri's fleeting hunch that Twilight could be somebody within his own circle is planted alongside the mystery of why the spy spared his life.

Fiona recovers the stolen WISE files from Wheeler and, after he escapes custody, ends his run herself with a punch that knocks him down and breaks her arm, rejecting his creed that a spy must trust no one.

Loid suffers back-to-back defeats, wounded by Yuri's gunfire and then beaten outright by Wheeler, marking one of the rare occasions Twilight is physically overwhelmed and saved by an ally's intervention.

The episode adapts the remainder of Chapter 82, Chapters 83 and 84, and the first half of Chapter 85. Anime additions include Loid recoiling as Yuri rises after the pipe blow, an expanded version of Fiona's daydream that ends with her face replacing Yor's in a Forger family portrait, and audible grunts as she wrecks her sabotaged gun.

For the first time across the entire series, an episode passes without Anya appearing in person; she shows up only as the portrait inside Fiona's imagination.
