Summary

Mission 58 arrived as the manga's first split release, and this half picks up with Loid and Bond cornered by burning rubble inside the apartment, Daisy the pug in tow. The setup came in the first installment: a training day at the park went nowhere because Bond is too soft-hearted for takedown work, and a walk meant to cheer him up instead became a chain of precognitive rescues, ending when Bond foresaw the fire, chewed off his leash, and dove into the building.

Loid maps an exit via the fire escape on the building's north side, but before he can move, Bond bumps him back, and the floor directly ahead caves in. Grateful and shaken, Loid decides the dog's nose must have picked up the weakening structure, never guessing at powers of foresight. To beat the thickening smoke he fashions a makeshift oxygen supply out of a plastic bag, tucks Daisy into a backpack, and the pair leap clear from a window on the second floor.

An elderly bystander marvels at the rescue while they empty the backpack, then everyone notices Bond's fur has caught fire. A bucket of water fixes that and exposes the scrawny body hiding under all that fluff, leaving Loid biting back laughter and Bond mortified. The moment passes when Bond locks onto a scent and takes off. He finds a man in black relishing the blaze from around a corner, feeding on Miss Bennett's cries for her lost dog, and sinks his teeth into the man's leg. The stranger draws a knife, but his bag tips out a load of accelerants and incendiary gear, and Loid instantly connects him to the string of recent arson cases. A quick takedown and some cord leave the culprit gift-wrapped for the police.

As Miss Bennett hugs Daisy nearby, Loid quietly withdraws before anyone can thank him. He pats Bond, and rather than the scolding Bond expects for biting a leg instead of an arm, Loid apologizes for pushing the training too hard and warns him against recklessness, since his family would worry. An affectionate nuzzle embarrasses the spy, who promises a dog park outing tomorrow and idly wonders why a wet Bond barks differently.

Key Events

Escape from the fire. Bond's silent warning saves Loid from a collapsing floor, and a plastic-bag air supply plus a second-story jump gets dog, spy, and pug out alive.

Daisy is returned. Miss Bennett reunites with her pug while the rescuers slip away unrecognized.

The serial arsonist falls. Bond's nose leads straight to the man behind the neighborhood fires, whom Loid restrains and leaves for the police.

A turning point for Loid and Bond. Loid's apology and his talk of family show genuine care replacing pure mission calculus.
