History
Rather than a genuine scholar, Cain was a predator wearing a researcher's mask, drawn to the paranormal club at Kamii University as a hunting ground. Hideyoshi Nagachika became his chosen prey, but the young man proved too clever and flipped the encounter around, after which ghoul investigators arrived to finish Cain off. His name is a deliberate biblical echo: in the Book of Genesis, Cain was Adam and Eve's firstborn who murdered his brother Abel out of envy, a link Kaneki himself points out in the Days novel.
