Appearance

Tiny and often mistaken for a child, Chie has kept such youthful features that guessing her real age from her looks alone is nearly impossible. Her hair is dark brown and her eyes a paler brown, though the light novels recolor both in burnt orange. The manga puts her in a green raincoat, and she is rarely without a camera, usually black but occasionally pink, tucked into a case that shifts between black, pink, and yellow across the different versions.

Personality

Chie is genuinely strange and hard to predict, so much so that her first meeting with Tsukiyama as a ghoul left most of her behavior open to interpretation. People are struck by her eccentricity and restless energy, both fed by an appetite for a good scoop or photograph, though she draws the line at dying for either one. The CCG keeps tabs on her for photographing ghoul hunts and other socially corrosive material, for aiding ghouls as they hunt, and for breaking into agency servers, and it has tried and failed more than once to bring her in.

History

Chie first crossed paths with Tsukiyama by photographing him mid-meal, which set off a chase she managed to shake before calmly showing him the picture and pointing out that they attended the same school. Rather than fear, she demanded food, and the encounter grew into an odd rapport. He soon walked her through the case of a beautiful nurse who secretly abused a wealthy elderly patient, and Chie documented the abuse from beneath the man's bed. When Tsukiyama dangled her out an eighth-floor window, she photographed him instead of pleading, then revealed she had queued a blog post that would expose him if she failed to cancel it in time, which cemented their peculiar partnership.

Over the years she served as an informant, once retrieving a list of the prisoners Aogiri had freed by hacking the CCG. During the Torso investigation she approached Kuki Urie and Ginshi Shirazu, trading photographs and camera-buff detective work for cash or one of Sasaki's belongings, and steered them toward a suspect. When Tsukiyama sank into a deep depression, she worked with Kanae to pull him out of it, risking arrest as investigators hunted her. She later helped rescue Tsukiyama, arriving with Touka, Yomo, and Mirumo, and waited on Rushima for the ghouls to escape. In the epilogue her photographs of a ruined Tokyo screen overseas; after years of supporting the TSC she returned to shooting whatever caught her eye and remained Tsukiyama's lifelong friend. Her one notable physical trait is speed, having once outrun an S-rated ghoul and left Tsukiyama wondering whether she was a ghoul or investigator herself.
