Enji Koma

Behind the counter Koma wore Anteiku's waiter uniform, and he was the lone member of the staff to finish the look with a bow tie. His brown hair was swept up into a pompadour above a rounded, bulbous nose. In his outlaw days as the Devil Ape he favored a long white hooded coat over matching white trousers, and his ghoul mask took the shape of a snarling monkey with markings ringing each eye.

Courteous, playful, and quietly proud, Koma stood in as Kaneki's supervisor whenever Yoshimura was away. He took real pride both in his craft at the cafe and in his old renown as the 20th Ward's Devil Ape. Far chattier with his coworkers than the reserved Kaya Irimi, he had known Yoshimura long before joining the shop. Alone with friends he showed a more reflective, patient side, musing on the give and take between a leader and those who follow. In his younger years, though, his temper had run far hotter and crueler.

A decade before the series, Koma headed a brutal gang of ghouls that held the 20th Ward, notorious for seeking out powerful investigators to kill and locked in rivalry with the Black Dobers. Yoshimura approached him with a vision of living within human society without needless bloodshed, and the idea won him over. Assigned at first to nothing but cleaning, Koma chafed at the menial work until he grasped that Yoshimura had a purpose behind it. His clumsiness annoyed a regular named Tsubasa and outraged his old gang, yet Koma explained that the chores were teaching him something new. In time Yoshimura taught him to brew coffee and set him at the counter, only for Kaya Irimi's arrival to displace him back to cleaning, a slight he smoothed over with his men by noting the manager wanted to challenge the less seasoned Irimi.

Through the years at Anteiku he became a fixture, handing Kaneki coffee to smooth over an accidental glimpse of Hinami, grieving quietly after Ryouko Fueguchi's death, and boasting of his Devil Ape past. When the CCG marched on Anteiku during the Owl Suppression Operation, Koma and Irimi met them in their old guises, summoning the remnants of the Apes and the Black Dobers to fight at their side. He dueled Mougan Tanakamaru and his Higher Mind quinque, dodging its blasts until a hidden short-range mode caught him in the stomach and left him unable to move, at which point Kaneki destroyed the weapon and carried him clear. He and Irimi later slipped out through V14, covered by subordinates who held off the Arima Squad so the two leaders could escape.

Reunited with a stunned Kaneki at the cafe called :re, Koma mourned the manager but took comfort in the family that remained, and he readily fell in behind Kaneki when Goat was formed, minding the shop and helping run communications during its operations. In combat he was a genuine threat, skilled in hand-to-hand fighting and agile enough to trade blows with a Special Class investigator for a long stretch. His bikaku kagune extended as a monkey's tail, which he used less as a blade than as a prehensile aid for scaling walls and evading attacks, and he claimed to be stronger even than the SS-rated Irimi.
