Haru Shirazu

Before her condition took hold, Haru looked like any ordinary girl. The disease changed that dramatically. Confined to a hospital bed, she carries an enormous Rc tumor swelling from her face, a growth so heavy that it must be held aloft at all times by cords fixed to the ceiling of her room. By the story's end, treatment restores her to full health.

Very little of Haru's character is documented, since her illness overshadows her time on the page. The story conveys only that she was once a rather unremarkable girl leading a normal life, and the quiet wish she voices, to be beautiful, echoes painfully through her brother's arc.

Haru's childhood collapsed early. Her mother walked out on the family, her father is believed to have taken his own life, and responsibility for her fell to her older brother. When she developed a tumorous Rc mass and needed hospitalization, Ginshi enlisted in the Quinx program, agreeing to be surgically altered and sent against ghouls in exchange for money to fund her treatment.

She first surfaces in his memories, when a small lump beneath her right eye and a complaint of itching went unrecognized as the onset of her disease. In the present she lies amid life-support equipment as the growth consumes the right side of her face, and her murmured wish to be beautiful clarifies her brother's unease when the Nutcracker uttered those same words. After his death, the surviving Quinx members each pledged to keep paying for her care. By the epilogue she has fully recovered and joins the squad at Ginshi's grave, afterward gladly accepting their invitation to lunch at their home.
