Hetare

Hetare is a round, plump cockatiel covered in soft pale-yellow plumage with grayish wings. Round orange patches mark his cheeks, as is typical of his kind, and a thin, wispy crest rises from the top of his head. His standout trait is a star-shaped marking on his left wing, the very feature that inspired Renji Yomo to nickname him Shooting Star Wing.

The bird owes his name to his most frequent utterance, the word hetare, which translates roughly to loser, coward, or good-for-nothing. His chatter, including odd lines such as insisting that he is a cat, lends him a comic streak, and Yomo once tried without success to coax him into saying good morning.

Hinami Fueguchi discovered the injured cockatiel on the veranda of Touka Kirishima's apartment and resolved to nurse him back to health. Because Touka feared birds, the two moved him to Anteiku while they searched for his true owners, and Yomo grew attached enough to stay overnight out of worry for him. After the 11th Ward Battle, Kaneki's group looked after him at their hideout in the 6th Ward. When Anteiku fell and its survivors scattered, he remained with Banjou and Hinami, and by the story's close he is seen in the company of Yomo and Ichika. He also placed twenty-fourth in a character popularity poll.
