Personality

Torso is a profoundly disturbed individual whose violence is extreme even by ghoul standards. He speaks of a lover while cradling headless corpses, and his surroundings, cluttered with blades, scissors, and stacks of instant photos, reflect a mind coming apart. For all that menace, he is careless and easily frightened, tending to hide and watch from cover when threatened. Around Ayato Kirishima and Hinami Fueguchi he turns meek and polite, yet an aching loneliness runs under everything he does, which he tries to fill by collecting bodies he calls lovers.

His diary lays bare a man who cannot relate to other people or even fully think of them as human. Convinced something inside him is broken, he chases the sense of connection his victims briefly give him, then punishes them savagely when he feels rejected. A romance that once ended badly seems to have set this pattern in motion, and after meeting Mutsuki he became certain the young investigator was the one who could finally fix him.

History

Saeki grew up in the mountains above a small village, sharing a tent with a father who told him he had eaten his mother to survive scarcity. Forbidden to leave because he was deemed slow and a danger, he passed his days picking through dumps for picture books he could not read. When his father vanished for weeks, hunger forced him down the slope, where a girl named Minomi coaxed him across the road and befriended him. She taught him to read, write, and ride a bicycle, and hinted at the bruises that fascinated him. His father eventually tore his cheeks open as punishment for visiting the village and abandoned him; alone in the rain, Saeki sheltered with a battered Minomi, only to wake and find his father butchering her. He killed his father in a blind fury and, left with nothing but Minomi's torso, hardened into the murderer called Torso.

As a taxi driver he used his cab to seize victims and shift bodies, drawing the pursuit of both the Quinx Squad and Shimoguchi's team while quietly passing recordings to Aogiri through Hinami. After a botched attack on Mutsuki triggered a chase and a clash with Serpent, Ayato rescued him and folded him into Aogiri. He served as a guard at the Auction, spiraling into panic when Mutsuki appeared for sale and later beating Kanae senseless to protect him. Recruited among Aogiri's hitmen during the Rose extermination, he crossed blades with a stronger Mutsuki before retreating.

His fixation peaked when he abducted Mutsuki and confined him in a pit he called their home, severing the investigator's limbs and speaking of marriage while relating the story of his own past. Believing he was leading his captive to a field of flowers as a surprise, Torso was decapitated with a single strike by Mutsuki, who then mutilated the remains that Kuki Urie later discovered. As a ghoul he carried an A rating, wielding a tentacled rinkaku kagune with strong regeneration, though his cowardice often outweighed his power.
