Appearance

By day she looks the part of a well-liked schoolgirl: an average height, long brown hair worn loose, brown eyes, and a uniform, her cheer and good looks winning admirers. In her guise as Lantern she buries all of that beneath a bulky trench coat and a mask shaped like a jack-o-lantern, a disguise so thorough that many take the killer for a man.

Personality

Minami embodies a mind split cleanly in two, keeping her human days and her ghoul nights walled off from each other. In the light she is diligent and friendly, quick to gather companions; in the dark she is a ravenous, savage murderer. She genuinely envies the calm, easy lives humans enjoy and longs to taste that peace through schooling, yet that same envy curdles into a warped crusade, and she hunts those she has decided squandered the gift of a human life. Pettiness and cruelty drive her to lump minor delinquents together with hardened criminals, insisting her killings do society a service. Hints of a hard past surface when she weeps over how punishing a ghoul's existence can be, and her bonds with other ghouls fray under her gluttony and contempt, which she compounds by manipulating and sacrificing others, from testing Kishou Arima's strength to deceiving Yamori.

History

Minami surfaces first in her Lantern persona, stalking delinquents through a remote stretch of the city, where she slays three of Taishi Fura's friends, Ryou among them, and wounds Aki Sasada's eye before slipping away. When a fellow ghoul, her own hairdresser, mistakes her for human and marks her as prey, Arima and Fura come to her rescue. Seizing the moment, she poses as an ordinary friend and volunteers to help them gather leads on ghoul activity. At the site their information points to, Fura breaks off to search elsewhere, and Minami, left alone with Arima, tries to kill him only to be overpowered. Fura returns, and after a brief exchange she lunges at him and dies by his hand.

As a born ghoul she wields a bikaku kagune shaped like a lizard's tail, remarkably supple, which she swings as a whip or coils around her arm like a blade, and can even tunnel underground to strike from beneath her prey. A telling clue, her unusually small shoe size, helps Arima unmask her, and after her death the kagune is fashioned into Fura's high-rated quinque, named Lantern in her memory.
