Aogiri

The Aogiri Tree's aggression ripples outward and puts every ward on edge. In the 11th Ward, ghouls band together to slaughter investigators until the local branch office is overrun. Waiting anxiously at the 20th Ward office, Marude learns the 11th has fallen with no survivors and convenes an emergency meeting to plan a full-scale retaliation, an assembly Juuzou disrupts by arriving late.

Afterward, Amon and Shinohara weigh their options. Amon is surprised that Marude cleared Juuzou for the coming operation, though his mind keeps drifting back to Kaneki, who stirs memories of his own past. Shinohara notes that Amon's quinque was destroyed and offers one of Mado's, left to him by will.

Trade at Anteiku has thinned out as customers avoid anything near investigators. The few who do come are Banjou and the Gas Masks, associates of Aogiri. Banjou demands the absent manager and settles for Kaneki and Touka, but catching Rize's scent on Kaneki enrages him into assuming the two are together. His threat ends abruptly when a panicked Kaneki headbutts him unconscious. On waking, Banjou reconciles with them and reveals why he came: to warn Rize to flee, since Aogiri is hunting her.

The truce is short-lived. Ayato storms into Anteiku and goes after Banjou, and Touka's confrontation with him is cut off by the arrival of Yamori and Nico. Yamori fixes on Kaneki at once, beats him senseless, and hauls him off to Aogiri while Touka is overpowered trying to stop it. Returning to find Kaneki gone, Yoshimura and Yomo gather the staff to organize a rescue, and Tsukiyama turns up at Yoshimura's invitation to lend a hand.

The 11th Ward branch office is annihilated by Aogiri Tree, leaving no survivors and pushing the CCG toward a major offensive. Banjou arrives at Anteiku to warn that Aogiri is targeting Rize. Yamori captures Kaneki and carries him off, prompting Anteiku to assemble a rescue effort with Tsukiyama's help.

This installment adapts chapters 49 through 53 along with chapters 56 and 59. The episode did not air in the United States on May 27, 2017, because of a Samurai Jack marathon.
