Episode 17: Rift

Brought back together after years apart at the academy, Juuzou Suzuya and the twins Kurona and Nashiro Yasuhisa recall their years as cadets. A lecture from Koutarou Amon once inspired the sisters and their friend Shizuku Kawakami to pursue investigator careers, encouraged that women could rise in the ranks. Shizuku's later death shattered them, and at her grave they were unsettled by Juuzou's cold indifference and his habit of methodically killing ants. In the present their fight favors Juuzou, and though they strip him of his weapon Jason, he produces hidden quinque knives, batters Kurona, and turns on Nashiro until Kurona flees carrying her badly wounded sister.

Kousuke Houji arrives with Seidou Takizawa to find the guards dead. Tatara steps out of the control room and demands the return of Fei and Yan. Houji cannot comply and draws his quinque Hollow instead. As Houji tires, Takizawa supports him with covering fire, and Tatara notes that the young man belongs to Houji's unit before an alarm floods the area with suppressant gas and he withdraws.

Ayato Kirishima still cannot break past Shinohara while the veteran wears Arata. On the verge of defeat, he is swept up in childhood memories of his father reading a bedtime story to him and his sister Touka before vanishing one night. The vacant look on his face startles Shinohara, who is then set upon by Kaneki in kakuja form. Shinohara damages one kakuhou only to discover Kaneki has several, regrowing tentacles as his mind slips further, and lands a punishing blow.

Amon supports the injured Akira Mado while awaiting reinforcements. Passing Kurona and Nashiro, he recognizes them and notices each bears a single kakugan, disturbed by the thought of humans turned into ghouls. Reaching Kaneki, who appears to be devouring Shinohara, Amon attacks in fury and voices his disappointment that Kaneki seems no different from any other ghoul. As Amon closes in for the kill, Kaneki weeps, withdraws his kagune, and expresses remorse. The One-Eyed Owl then drops from above amid a torrent of bodies, seizes Ayato and Kaneki, and escapes, leaving Amon to note the fight is far from finished.

Flashbacks trace the shared academy history of Juuzou and the Yasuhisa twins and Shizuku's death. Juuzou reveals his concealed quinque knives and overpowers the sisters, forcing Kurona to retreat with the wounded Nashiro. Houji and Takizawa hold off Tatara, who names Douhi before the gas alarm drives him out. Ayato relives his father's departure and collapses, and Kaneki in kakuja form displays multiple kakuhou against Shinohara. Amon confronts Kaneki, who breaks down in remorse, and the Owl carries Kaneki and Ayato away.

The episode adapts manga chapters 100 through 103 along with 105 and 106. It continues the merged Cochlea and Kanou raid storyline, spotlighting the tangled bond between Juuzou and the Yasuhisa sisters and the first real confrontation between Amon and the transformed Kaneki.
