Episode 18: Thousand Paths

Since awakening his kakuja, Ken Kaneki cannot rein it in. Sudden spasms rack him with pain, and holding the power back drains him completely while it destroys everything around him when it slips loose. His role in the Cochlea raid has cemented his image as a menace, and all of the 23rd Ward now counts as hazardous. Whispers about him circulate among humans and ghouls alike. At Anteiku, the clumsy new hire Roma Hoito is smitten with him and badgers Hinami Fueguchi for details, while Touka Kirishima, absent studying for exams, cannot escape the gossip either. Within the CCG, the surviving Yukinori Shinohara verifies that Kaneki is a dangerous kakuja.

With Shinohara hospitalized, Juuzou Suzuya passes time alone at a zoo until a parent and child stir old memories. He recalls his time serving Big Madam as a Scrapper, earning "Good Boy Points" through torture, until the CCG raided the Ghoul Restaurant and left him behind in the ring. Taken in but difficult to handle, he was nearly deemed unfit to be around others before Shinohara argued he should be seen as a victim and made him a partner. Shinohara, freshly discharged, finds him and admires his sketch of giraffes that Juuzou enjoys imagining disemboweled. Told the Owl is strong, Juuzou is thrilled, and though he shrugs off talk of his own mortality, Shinohara admits he would grieve if Juuzou died before they head off to eat together.

Haunted by the idea of humans becoming ghouls, Amon looks into Kurona and Nashiro Yasuhisa, while thoughts of Eyepatch also gnaw at him. A chance meeting with Hideyoshi Nagachika, who calls Eyepatch "scary," only deepens his unease. Hoping to distract himself, he agrees to dinner with Seidou Takizawa and brings along Akira Mado. She and Takizawa fall into a drunken quarrel, and once Takizawa is recalled to work, Akira and Amon are left to face their emotions. She unloads her many resentments: the Owl and Rabbit who slew her parents, the CCG ranking culture that stalled her father's career, herself for feeling she was a burden to him, and Amon for failing to keep him safe. Amon accepts blame for her father's death yet vows to keep her safe as the daughter of his mentor. After she passes out, he takes her home, misreads her grief as an advance, and punishes himself with push-ups on the balcony all night. The next morning she teases him as a pervert but apologizes for the trouble.

Yoshitoki Washuu convenes the hand-picked investigators of the Owl suppression team. Their conclusion is that the Owl leads Aogiri Tree, and their foremost objective becomes finding it and Aogiri's headquarters and destroying them.

Kaneki's uncontrolled kakuja and rising notoriety turn the 23rd Ward into a danger zone. Flashbacks trace Juuzou's history as Big Madam's Scrapper and how Shinohara took him on as a partner. Amon investigates the Yasuhisa twins and dwells on Eyepatch. A dinner with Takizawa and Akira ends with Akira airing her grievances and Amon pledging to protect her. Yoshitoki forms the Owl suppression team, which names the Owl as Aogiri's leader and sets destroying the organization as its top goal.

The episode adapts material from manga chapters 84, 108, 109, 110, 111, and 122. It leans heavily on character interiority, using Juuzou's backstory and the Amon and Akira sequence to develop both alongside the plot momentum toward the Owl hunt.
