Episode 23: Deluge of Flowers

With Shinohara gravely wounded, Suzuya is left to confront the freshly arrived one-eyed Owl by himself. Aogiri Tree enters the fray against the CCG, whose forces are swamped by the sheer number of foes. Kaneki meanwhile meets Amon, who blocks his path to Anteiku. The two prove evenly matched, and Kaneki tells Amon he has no wish to fight him and that under different circumstances they would have had much to talk about. Amon acknowledges the sentiment but calls such a thing impossible before pressing his attack.

In another part of the fight, Tatara pins Seidou down and presses him about Houji's location. Out of sheer defiance the young investigator stays silent, so Tatara flings him into the air, where Noro tears him apart as a horrified Hide looks on from afar. Noro then swings around, catches sight of Hide, and moves to strike.

As the duel between Amon and Kaneki ends with both badly hurt, the scene shifts to Suzuya, who cannot land a blow on the Owl. The Owl strikes at him, but Arima intervenes and engages it, evading its attacks with ease and wounding it repeatedly with his quinque. When the Owl charges head-on, Arima severs its arm, and it swallows Yoshimura and flees. An injured Kaneki makes his way toward Anteiku, while nearby Akira comes upon her partner's shattered quinque and is overwhelmed by grief. The episode closes as the Owl regurgitates Yoshimura and reverts to its normal shape, confirming that Sen Takatsuki and the Owl are one being.

Aogiri joins the battle and overwhelms the CCG. Kaneki and Amon fight to a mutual standstill, both left seriously injured. Tatara and Noro brutalize Seidou, and Noro spots Hide. Arima saves Suzuya, wounds the Owl, and cuts off its arm, after which it takes Yoshimura and retreats. Akira discovers her partner's wrecked quinque, and the Owl is unmasked as Sen Takatsuki.

The episode adapts manga chapters 133 through 138 along with 141 and 142. In the manga Juuzou loses his entire leg during the Owl fight, whereas the anime has his leg only break severely.
