Episode 4: Supper

The eccentric Shuu Tsukiyama drops by Anteiku and fixes his attention on Kaneki, who is unsettled by him. An irritated Touka eventually drives Tsukiyama off, though he vows to come back, and warns Kaneki to keep his distance. Later, dining on the eyes of virgins, Tsukiyama savors the memory of Kaneki's scent. At school, Touka shares lunch with Yoriko Kosaka, her closest friend, who coaxes her into trying some homemade food; Touka hides any trouble but nearly vomits in the bathroom afterward, keeping it down yet left weak. During a break at Kamii University, Tsukiyama visits Kaneki as he reads, and the two bond over books. Noticing Kaneki is reading Sen Takatsuki's Monochrome Rainbow, Tsukiyama invites him to a cafe the author supposedly frequents and mentions having been friends with Rize, catching his interest. Kaneki agrees to meet again.

Back at Anteiku, Yoshimura relieves Kaneki of his shift and sends him to see Yomo, who leads him to an underground space and starts drilling him in close-quarters fighting, proposing daily sessions after work. Yomo next brings him to Helter Skelter, where the bar's owner Itori waits to meet him, having heard much about him from Yomo and Uta. After some talk about the trio's history, Itori hurls blood across his face, which drives the kakugan to surface, then reassures the embarrassed young man. She tells him about one-eyed ghouls, said to be born to a ghoul and a human, though such pregnancies are so rare their existence is treated as legend. Asked about Rize, Itori offers only rumors, including one that her death was deliberate and that a figure was spotted atop the structure where she perished. Yomo grows upset, but the idea lodges in Kaneki's thoughts.

Later on, the two meet again at a cafe and turn to the subject of Rize. Recalling how she scornfully rejected his invitation to his gourmet club, the memory enrages Tsukiyama, who smashes a cup, and Kaneki nicks his finger on a fragment as he checks on him. Tsukiyama hands over a handkerchief and, as an apology, offers to escort him to a spot Rize herself once favored. Alone in the bathroom, Tsukiyama draws in the aroma of Kaneki's blood, growing intoxicated as he struggles to keep composed. Kaneki is brought to the supposed place, ordered by strange servants to bathe and change into formal clothes, and served coffee before realizing he is on a lift descending into a pit ringed by watching ghouls. Tsukiyama appears as Mr. MM, stirring the crowd by broadcasting Kaneki's human aroma before declaring him the evening's meal.

The scrapper Taro, who serves Madam A, is presented as executioner and attacks after a clumsy greeting. Kaneki flees, finds the exit locked, and dodges Taro's giant saw until it lodges in the wall, then runs, kicking Taro as he vaults past to little effect. His legs turn numb and give out, since the coffee he drank was drugged, and Taro slams him against the wall and strangles him. As his vision fades, Kaneki's kakugan activates, stunning the crowd as a one-eyed ghoul is revealed. Enraged, he wrenches free and knocks Taro away. Witnessing the fabled one-eyed ghoul in the flesh, Tsukiyama is seized by passion and runs Taro through from behind with his bare hands when the drugged Kaneki can no longer fight. He plays the ordeal off as a joke, offering Taro in Kaneki's place, and leans in to sniff him, resolving to make this treasure entirely his own.

Tsukiyama takes an interest in Kaneki and befriends him over books while scheming to eat him. Yomo begins training Kaneki in combat and introduces him to Itori at Helter Skelter, where he learns about one-eyed ghouls and hears rumors that Rize's death may have been deliberate. Tsukiyama lures Kaneki to a ghoul feast where he is meant to be the meal, but Kaneki's kakugan activates, revealing him as a one-eyed ghoul. Enthralled, Tsukiyama kills the scrapper Taro instead and vows to claim Kaneki for himself.

The episode adapts manga chapters 33, 34, 36, 37, 38, and 39. The anime rearranges the Gourmet and Dove's Emergence arcs, reportedly to introduce characters sooner and let others who die remain onscreen longer.
