The church battle ends and life at Anteiku briefly steadies, but the CCG closes in on the Fueguchi family. As Hinami learns new words to impress her father, investigators corner her mother in the rain, setting a devastating tragedy in motion.
Fueled by Kaneki's flesh, Touka overpowers Tsukiyama and finishes him off, ordering him to eat himself. Nishiki frees Kimi, but Touka insists the human knows too much and must die. Her shards fly, Nishiki shields Kimi with his body, and when Kimi glimpses Touka she blurts out a compliment that leaves the ghoul rattled and confused. Afterward Kaneki resumes his shifts, and Hide is startled to find Nishiki now waiting tables.
At the same time, Yamori visits Dr. Fueguchi to collect his pliers, then attacks him and hurls him outside where Amon and Mado wait. Yamori toys with the pair before losing interest and departing. The wounded doctor, desperate to see his family again, tries to fight the investigators and is instantly defeated. Mado feels the scene has handed him fresh leads.
Kaneki checks on Touka, who is still shaken that she could not kill Kimi, and he argues that the love he witnessed between Hinami and Ryouko proves ghouls and humans differ little. Meanwhile Hinami, proud of vocabulary picked up from Kaneki and from her reading, asks her mother for a new book. Kaneki explains what a cloudburst is, a word she is eager to share with her father.
Leaving a bookstore under sudden rain, Ryouko notices suspicious men and steers Hinami away, but Hinami catches her father's scent and races ahead. She turns into an alley and is confronted by Mado and Amon. Ryouko catches up, summons her kagune as a shield, and tells Hinami to flee back to Anteiku. As the girl runs sobbing through the streets, she drops her new book, and Kaneki, walking in the rain, spots her.
