Summary

Yoshitoki Washuu tells the CCG that Aogiri Tree's base has been found on the island of Rushima and that a full invasion will begin. On the island, Eto speaks with Tatara about their looming defeat as most of their bases fall, then says she has business back on the mainland and bids him a final farewell. Meanwhile Haise Sasaki, now paired with Nimura Furuta, interrogates Shunji Shiono, Sen Takatsuki's editor, about her suspected identity as a ghoul.

At a live press conference, Takatsuki, who is Eto, announces to the world that she is a ghoul and that her final book tells the story of ghoulkind's struggle. The novel, King Bileygr, features a group modeled on the Washuu Clan and ties them to ghouls. Sasaki appears and reveals to Ayato Kirishima, Eto's escort, that Hinami is set to be executed within days, and Eto calmly walks off to her arrest.

Key Events

A flashback shows a young Eto struggling as an author, dismissed by Shiono, and stealing to survive until Shiono, moved by her rejected draft, tracks her down and offers to work for her. She once visited Anteiku only to find her father Yoshimura happy among his friends, and she left a crumpled copy of her debut work, Dear Kafka, at the doorstep. Shiono later discovers human flesh in her fridge. In the present, Kishou Arima and Furuta attend a meeting of V, where Kaiko orders Furuta to learn whether Eto is the One-Eyed King and sends Arima to hunt Matasaka Kamishiro, known as Shachi, to find Rize.

Arima ambushes Shachi, who refuses to reveal Rize's location, and kills him with Narukami as Shachi weakly tells Rize to run. As Eto is transported to Cochlea, she convinces Sasaki that the Washuu are in league with ghouls by pointing to the Rc Scan Gates that stay silent for members of V. Furuta visits her cell and argues that society is controlled by propping up a common enemy, then hands her a pate made from her editor, and she mocks his status as Tsuneyoshi Washuu's illegitimate child.

Notes

Opening the second season of Tokyo Ghoul:re, the episode adapts Re: chapters 60 through 68 with a title punning on replace. Because the arc runs two events at once in the manga, the adaptation focuses on Kaneki's mainland thread and cuts numerous scenes, including Eto's speech to Aogiri and Furuta's alliance with Kanou. The finale reveals a hidden recording of Furuta's words, and Eto asks Sasaki to kill the One-Eyed King, as Ayato and Banjou muster the Gas Masks to breach Cochlea and free Hinami.
