Summary

Ayato Kirishima, Kazuichi Banjou, and the Gas Masks gang storm Cochlea and cut down its guards. Entering Hinami's cell, Kaneki privately resolves to make freeing her his final act before dying at Arima's hand. Arima arrives and attacks Ayato, and just as Ayato faces death, Renji Yomo and Touka Kirishima rush in to save him. A flashback reveals Yomo as the uncle of Touka and Ayato, since their mother Hikari was his sister.

Hikari was killed by Arima while her husband Arata could not save her. Arata then turned to cannibalism and developed a kakuja to grow stronger, but was eventually slain by Kureo Mado and Yukinori Shinohara, and Yomo went on to join Anteiku. Back in the present, Touka, Ayato, and Yomo press their fight against Arima.

Key Events

Fleeing the corridors, Kaneki and Hinami run into Furuta, who mocks them and tries to kill them before Hinami pierces his chest with her kagune. Kaneki reaches Yomo in time to save him from Arima, then stays behind to buy the group time. Their duel carries them into the depths of Cochlea, both crashing into a flower pit at the bottom. Arima arms himself with the Owl's quinque and wounds Kaneki repeatedly, calling him weak, until Kaneki unleashes his kakuja.

Elsewhere, Eto breaks from her cell and chases Furuta. Before she can kill him, he reveals that Akihiro Kanou made him a one-eyed ghoul using Rize's kagune, and he uses it to shatter Eto's kakuja and gravely wound her, answering her question about his desire with the cryptic aim of bringing super peace. In the pit, a battered Kaneki nearly gives up until a vision of Hideyoshi Nagachika urges him to live on. Rising with white hair, he destroys Arima's quinque and declares the fight over, and when he refuses to kill him, Arima cuts his own throat with the broken weapon.

Manga details are altered, including Furuta writing in his own blood after his defeat, Hikari's obscured face in the flashback, Kaneki being clothed rather than nude in his dream state, and Furuta not severing Eto's limbs.
