Savage

While Touka tends to her injured arm, Kaneki heads to the storeroom for roasted espresso beans and runs into her there. As she reaches for the jar to help, a stab of pain in her arm makes her drop it, scattering the beans across the floor. When Kaneki shows concern, she snaps at him to leave her be and shoves him out of the room. Yoshimura, guessing she has tangled with the doves, remarks that anyone who gets involved must bear the consequences alone and that her survival is her own affair. Kaneki chooses to help her regardless.

Offered treatment, Touka brands Kaneki irritating for a mere human. He counters that he is part ghoul himself, but she accuses him of only playing at being an ally, calling him a weak coward for failing to kill the doves in her place with Rize's kagune. Declaring herself a murderer who deserves to die, she rages that ghouls like Ryouko and Hinami were slaughtered at random despite being unable to defend themselves, even as she acknowledges good humans exist.

Though he tells her that avenging them was misguided, Kaneki admits he would grieve deeply if someone close to him died, Touka especially. He then asks her to teach him to control his kagune, reasoning that standing by does nothing is far worse than being unable to face the investigators at all.
