Chapter 22

At Anteiku, Hinami Fueguchi struggles to rest. Reading the paper, Kaneki comes across the story of Ippei Kusaba's death and starts to suspect Touka Kirishima had a hand in it. She admits it without hesitation, calling herself a killer and swearing to keep going until every investigator is gone. Kaneki reflects that Touka, born a ghoul, weighs human lives by a standard entirely unlike his own. It emerges that Hinami has neither eaten nor slept properly since her mother was killed. Touka confesses she truly wanted vengeance on Hinami's behalf, which is exactly why she and Kaneki entered the Commission of Counter Ghoul. She goes to comfort the girl, promising to handle everything, and hands her a newspaper dense with kanji, prompting Hinami to say she will ask Kaneki to teach her the words. Touka bristles with a flash of jealousy at Hinami's admiration for his book smarts.

Elsewhere, Kureo Mado and Koutarou Amon comb through a site. Mado swiftly concludes that the identities and information the two students gave the CCG were fabricated. The pair move on, though Mado lingers to dig a little deeper. Back at Anteiku, Hinami reads the article covering Kusaba's death, and the promise Touka made springs back into her thoughts. When Kaneki warns Touka that Hinami keeps oversleeping and her room has gone silent, Touka checks on her, only to find the girl gone and the window left open, meaning she climbed out and fled.

Touka openly admits to killing Kusaba and reveals her infiltration of the CCG was driven by revenge for Hinami's mother. The chapter underscores the contrast between Touka's ghoul-born outlook and Kaneki's human values. It closes on Hinami vanishing from Anteiku through her window after reading of Kusaba's death.

Titled Shinbun, or Newspaper, this twenty-second chapter appeared on March 8, 2012, as part of the third volume. The printed news of Kusaba's death drives the emotional turns for both Touka and Hinami.
