Chapter 7

When the trio fails to turn up the missing CD, Nishiki Nishio claims he left it at his place and proposes they retrieve it. Ken Kaneki senses that Nishiki hides his predatory side behind a gentle front, so he chooses to stay beside Hideyoshi Nagachika for protection. As Nishiki steps away for a phone call, the two friends talk about him, agreeing he is the sort of person Hide would dislike.

Nishiki buys the pair taiyaki, which Kaneki tucks away to eat later. Kaneki marvels that Nishio managed to swallow the fish without bringing it back up, yet he stays suspicious. Though Nishiki's act as an ordinary student is seamless, Kaneki notices that the neck wound Touka Kirishima once dealt him has not fully closed.

The trip home proves to be a trap. Nishio corners the boys, kicks Hide into unconsciousness, and mocks Kaneki, explaining that a human's expression of betrayal makes the kill more delicious. He accuses Kaneki of craving Hide's flesh, but Kaneki insists he is nothing like a ghoul. Growing angry over Touka, Nishio calls Kaneki's body weak and vomits the fish he ate onto Hide, then presses his foot against the unconscious boy's face as Kaneki looks on in horror.

Nishiki lures Kaneki and Hide toward his home under the pretext of finding the CD. Kaneki recognizes Nishiki's kind manner as a disguise and spots his unhealed neck injury. The walk becomes an ambush in which Nishiki knocks out Hide, reveals his ghoul nature, vomits on Hide, and pins him underfoot.

Titled Deception (欺罔, Kimō), the seventh chapter falls in Volume 1 and exposes Nishiki's hidden menace. Touka is referenced through the earlier blow that left his neck injured.
