Chapter 94

Akira Mado and Hideyoshi Nagachika pore over Kanou's property holdings. Akira lays out his background: the son of the director of Kanou General Hospital, he finished at Teihou University's School of Medicine, went to Germany as a research assistant for the GFG, then served three years at the CCG before stepping down. Afterward he joined his father's hospital and built a fine reputation for his care. Hideyoshi wonders aloud what could have driven him to walk away from the CCG.

Amon produces the blueprint of another estate in Kanou's name, one unlike the rest. It is poorly suited to be a vacation home and far too large for a single occupant, and Amon judges it a strong candidate for the doctor's refuge. Inwardly, he counts himself lucky to have Hideyoshi working with them for his friend's sake, and reflects that closing the Binge Eater case would mean real progress for the twentieth ward branch. By Shinohara's reasoning, the girl from the I-beam accident was the Binge Eater, the organ recipient was Kaneki, and the surgeon was Kanou. Amon dwells on the doctor's aims and on what it would mean to graft ghoul organs into a person, how such a kakuhou recipient should even be regarded, and how Hideyoshi could bear his closest friend turning into a ghoul. He recalls Donato Porpora's remarks about the White Rabbit and Alice and decides that either Kanou or Kaneki must be what the man meant.

At Orca, Banjou and Tsukiyama confirm that Matasaka Kamishiro has thrown in with Aogiri Tree, a claim Gil refuses to accept, unable to picture Shachi joining them. Back at the hideout, Kaneki works through a stack of martial arts books as part of his training. When Banjou, Tsukiyama, and Hinami break in to brief him on their plans, he asks Tsukiyama to spar with him, and Tsukiyama gladly agrees.

The investigators reconstruct Kanou's résumé and flag an oversized estate as his probable hiding spot. Amon ties the Binge Eater case to Kaneki's transplant and recalls Donato's cryptic clue. Banjou and Tsukiyama verify Shachi's defection to Aogiri, and Kaneki deepens his training by enlisting Tsukiyama as a sparring partner.

Part of the tenth volume, the chapter carries the Japanese title 胸中 (Kyochu), rendered in English as Inner Thoughts. Much of it unfolds through Amon's introspection about Kanou's motives and Hideyoshi's loyalty.
