Jack: Chapter 2

Fura visits Aki in the hospital, thinking back on Ryou's death and how he had always pictured his friend dying in a bike crash instead. He then heads to the school rooftop and runs into Arima again. Assuming Aki to be Fura's childhood friend, Arima asks after her, and Fura in turn demands to know what Arima understands about the monsters.

Arima calls them ghouls: creatures that share a human appearance, letting them blend in while feeding on human flesh, which makes them mankind's natural enemies. He admits that hunting ghouls is a hobby of his, and observes that ghouls possess the same intelligence as humans and can grasp the notion of equality despite how different the two kinds are.

Uninterested in the philosophy, Fura grabs Arima's shirt and insists he only wants to avenge his friend. He asks to help with the Lantern case and to indulge Arima's unsettling pastime. Arima first declines, calling Fura a liability, but relents and agrees to aid his revenge. He reveals that the school's night watchman was recently wounded near the storehouse and suspects the Lantern, whose pumpkin-like mask evokes Halloween. Arima reasons the culprit could be a transfer student or a homeroom teacher and stresses checking every possibility.

The pair agree to investigate together, though Fura frets about being eaten even if he stops attending, prompting Arima to mock him since he skips most days anyway. After ten days of searching, an impatient Fura builds a nail-studded baseball bat, which Arima dismisses as useless against a ghoul; countering a kagune, he explains, requires another kagune or something akin to it. Fura asks about the guitar case Arima always carries. When Ogata approaches, the boys accuse him of being the culprit, and as he denies it, they watch in horror as a kagune stabs him from behind.

Arima explains the nature of ghouls and reluctantly accepts Fura as a partner in the Lantern investigation. After ten days of searching, Ogata is impaled from behind by a kagune while denying involvement, shocking both boys.

The second chapter of Tokyo Ghoul: Jack runs thirty-five pages and carries a US release date of July 5, 2016. Ryou appears only in a photograph, and the Lantern is referenced rather than shown.
