Summary

The chapter opens with a kagune slaughtering several investigators. A cluster of them, Matsuri Washuu among them, stares at the culprit, and in the distance Nico cradles a dead investigator while laughing to himself, striking Matsuri as oddly familiar. Back at the control room, Furuta simply wishes the whole affair over quickly, while exhausted investigators gasp for breath after their clashes, one of them, Kuramoto Itou, unable to believe what he is seeing.

From a rooftop, Koori Ui studies the battlefield until Mougan Tanakamaru breaks his concentration to ask how they should respond. Ui muses on whether the Clowns are even ghouls and how the ordeal could gut the resolve of future investigators. To him this is no extermination but a snare, one meant to grind the CCG down. Nearby, Juuzou Suzuya trades blows with Uta using Jason's 13 and realizes he can no longer land a hit, wondering whether his earlier strikes had been allowed. He sinks a few daggers into the ghoul before Uta slips away, and Mutsuki gives chase as Juuzou, warning him to be careful, privately notes that he sounds just like Shinohara.

Inside the lab, Amon regrows his kagune sacs as Kaneki dwells on their past encounters, recalling that among every investigator he faced before becoming Haise, Amon alone regarded him not merely as a ghoul but as a person, a man now robbed of speech. Sasaki puzzles over why the CCG would keep Amon here and dreads that they mean to experiment on him. He charges in vain, and Ayato urges him to stand down, reminding him the mission to secure the Rc suppressants is already accomplished, that many people, Touka included, depend on him, and that he cannot afford to die. Takizawa and Kurona, free of that burden, insist on holding Amon back and reminisce about their own CCG days.

Meanwhile Mutsuki hunts Uta down, seizes him, and stabs him again and again, only to hear laughter in his skull as the ghoul turns toward him wearing the face of Haise Sasaki and calling out his name.

Key Events

Nico's carnage and Ui's analysis reframe the Clowns assault as a deliberate trap designed to break the CCG's morale. Kaneki is forced to abandon the transformed, speechless Amon after Ayato reminds him of his responsibilities, leaving Takizawa and Kurona to contain the ghoul. The chapter ends as Uta once more exploits Sasaki's face, this time to torment Mutsuki mid-pursuit.
