:re Chapter 167

The Taxidermied Owl keeps cutting down investigators as the V agents heal, betraying their own ghoulification. Asked whether he truly breathed the poison, Kaiko calls the gas a blessing, explaining that the half-humans born of V and the Sunlit Garden die young from an imbalance in their bodies, and that turning them into ghouls makes them whole, with the Dragon as an ark of life. He notes V considered Arima a fool for refusing them, since joining would have halted his rapid aging.

Ui drives a blow through Eto's torso with no effect, and Juuzou Suzuya loses his prosthesis to the Owl. Ayumu Hogi shields the wounded Misato Gori, and as ghouls join the fray, Kaiko calls the V agents back while the Owl ground-pounds out deadly shock waves. Below, Kaneki and Ayato reach Kimi Nishino by radio, Kaneki glimpsing an illusion of Rize Kamishiro. They find a mound of encased golems Kimi says are harmless, but higher up they meet the toxic type, which sickens Ayato, severs their contact, and begins hatching.

Kaiko reveals V's belief that ghoulification completes the frail half-humans and that the Dragon is their salvation. Ui's attack fails to faze the puppet Owl. The Owl scatters the investigators with shock waves. Kaneki and Ayato ascend the golem mound, encounter the poisonous variety, and lose their radio link as the eggs begin to open.
