:re Chapter 6

Just as Urie and the others have Torso backed into a corner, Serpent appears and declares that Karao belongs to him. Sneering at the CCG for being no better than Aogiri Tree in the way it manufactures ghouls, he turns on Urie's team. Urie guards against a blow with his kagune and draws his quinque, only to be beaten down. Shirazu answers with a volley of kagune missiles, but Serpent destroys them. With Urie badly weakened, Mutsuki climbs out of the taxi and freezes in fear, doubting he can stand against Serpent. As the ghoul prepares to strike him, Shirazu moves to buy Mutsuki an opening to run and plans a retreat with him, which enrages Urie.

A flashback returns Urie to a conversation with S3 Squad members of the CCG, who describe pulling back from a battle against a fearsome ghoul known as the One-Eyed Owl. They apologize for having abandoned his father, Special Class Urie, in that fight.

Out of tactics, Urie bites into his own arm to reawaken his kagune, reasoning that felling an S-rated ghoul would win him more recognition than Sasaki. At the moment the Quinx are about to be overwhelmed, Sasaki appears and uses the blade quinque Yukimura 1/3 to shear off the tip of Serpent's kagune. His follow-up is turned aside by a kick, and he sprawls to the ground weighing his next move. Within his mind, the young man named Kaneki who haunts Haise's nightmares surfaces, insisting that Haise is too weak to shield his subordinates from Serpent and pressing him again and again to accept him. Haise brushes the demand aside and resolves to think for himself.

He asks Mutsuki to summon Akira Mado, then calls up both his kagune and kakugan and cracks a knuckle as he readies himself for the fight.

Serpent intervenes in the Quinx pursuit of Torso and overwhelms Urie and Shirazu. A flashback reveals that the CCG's S3 Squad abandoned Urie's father to the One-Eyed Owl. Urie bites his arm to force out his kagune, chasing recognition over Sasaki. Sasaki arrives, damages Serpent with Yukimura 1/3, rejects the inner Kaneki's plea to be accepted, and prepares to fight.

The chapter is titled Akuto e no Akuto (握人への悪賭) in Japanese, with the English rendering Reaction to a Reaction, and opens the first volume of Tokyo Ghoul:re.
