:re Chapter 74

At the Sunlit Garden, Arima holds a conversation with an old man. In Cochlea, Haise Sasaki fights to stay upright after losing his legs, and Arima asks whether he wishes to die a second time. Haise recalls how many investigators described Arima as impossible to understand; he cannot make sense of the man either, yet regards him as a father figure. He drags himself away, trying to reattach his legs so he can heal, but Arima stabs his remaining leg and kicks the severed one out of reach. Arima remarks that he could have dealt Haise a fatal wound six hundred and forty-five times over and that reaching Haise's allies would cost him under five minutes. He tells Haise his eyes are those of a dead man and promises to kill his friends once he is finished with him. Haise vows to stop him, is knocked back, and hears Arima call every hour spent training him a waste.

As Arima thrusts IXA forward, Haise blocks the strike, snaps the weapon, and reveals his kakuja. Arima calls for a fresh quinque and receives Owl, noting that Haise has finally grown serious. He explains that he tore the koukaku behind the weapon out of a ghoul at the age of nineteen and that Haise will be the first person he turns it against. In her cell, Eto Yoshimura watches the duel unfold while eating the pate Furuta prepared. Ayato Kirishima's group reaches the control room, where Ayato deactivates the compactors, and Banjou and the Gas Masks rejoin them. Touka observes that had they lingered, Haise would have tried to protect them instead of taking on Arima. Without warning the compactors whir back to life as Furuta and a cluster of V agents look on, the machinery beginning to grind the trapped ghouls.

Arima cripples Haise further, mocking his will to fight and threatening his friends. Haise breaks IXA and reveals his kakuja, prompting Arima to summon the quinque Owl, which he made from a ghoul's koukaku at nineteen. Ayato deactivates the compactors and reunites with Banjou's group. Furuta reactivates the compactors, and they begin slaughtering the ghouls as V agents watch.

The chapter's title, EF, romanized as I Efu, is drawn from a song of the same name by Ling tosite Sigure, whose frontman serves as lead guitarist and vocalist and also performed Unravel, the opening theme of the anime's first season. It ran in the combined issue 2016-22-23 on April 28, 2016, and was later collected in the seventh volume of Tokyo Ghoul:re, positioned between chapters 73 and 75.
