At the Chateau, Haise strikes Urie for putting the squad in danger and reminds him that pulling back is the right call when lives are on the line. He strips Urie of the squad leader post, and the two argue over rank and who should be giving orders. When Urie sneers at Haise by branding him a ghoul, his angry teammates round on him, with Shirazu kicking and shouting. Haise names Shirazu the new leader and warns Urie he will eat him if the insult is ever repeated. Alone in his room afterward, Haise weeps while wrestling with whether he belongs alongside the CCG.

Sparring with Arima, he compares Urie and Shirazu as candidates for leadership. Haise apologizes for losing his temper and drawing his kagune, but Arima brushes it aside and hands back a borrowed book. Pressed about the voices he hears, Haise concludes he was once Ken Kaneki, though the previous twenty years remain a blank to him. He describes viewing Arima and Akira Mado as parental figures and says he is content living within the CCG, telling himself he can flourish even inside a make-believe family. Back at the Chateau, Shirazu offers Urie a can of sweet red bean soup and tries to smooth things over.

In Team Mado's investigation room, Haise asks Akira about her look into Torso's home, and she reports it packed with the torsos of his victims. The conversation breaks off when Shimoguchi's squad alerts her that a ghoul has assaulted the team, identified as Aogiri Tree's rabbit-masked assailant, Ayato Kirishima.

Haise demotes Urie and installs Shirazu as squad leader after Urie's reckless conduct and insult. In private, Haise confirms to Arima that he was formerly Ken Kaneki and recalls nothing of the past two decades. Akira's investigation reveals Torso's home stocked with victims' torsos, and a report arrives that the Rabbit ghoul of Aogiri, Ayato, has attacked Shimoguchi's squad.

The chapter cements Haise's ambivalence toward the CCG, framing his adopted household as one he knowingly accepts despite calling it artificial. It also lines up the Torso case and Ayato's reappearance as the arc's next threats.
