Ear

The Ear has a drawn, pinched face set with narrow eyes, a thin mustache, and a creased chin. He dresses in a mid-toned wrap around his head and a short-sleeved coat pulled over a long-sleeved tunic, with boots below and a cloak added once winter sets in.

Quiet and sparing with words, the Ear keeps mostly to himself.

He is capable enough as a fighter to stand his ground, carrying an axe and shield, and seasoned enough to judge how fast a body of troops is moving. His signature gift, though, is his hearing. Pressing his head to the earth, he can tell men from animals and gauge the pace of a marching column, a talent the whole band leans on; when he needs silence to listen, the others freeze and wait. His one blind spot is an ambush held perfectly still, and in winter the snow muffles sound and shrinks his range.

His worth shows across the flight through Wales in late 1013, while Askeladd escorts Canute away from Thorkell. At the River Severn he reads the ground and reports that Thorkell trails by a shade under one day with roughly five hundred mounted men, far closer than the two-day gap he had measured earlier, and he flags a pair of distant scouts on a hill. Marching toward Brycheiniog he warns of a large force waiting ahead, and when the hidden warriors spring their trap by shooting Askeladd's horse, he shrugs off a complaint by pointing out that a motionless ambush makes no sound to catch. Posted to a tree outside a captured village that December, he notes how the snow eats the noise and limits him, yet still detects armed farmers trying to flank from the east and, at midnight, Thorkell closing from the south. As the band smashes a bridge over the Severn in January 1014, he times it precisely, sensing Thorkell's arrival just as spear-glints appear across the far hill. His end is uncertain, but his severed head later turns up as a target in an idle archery contest among Thorkell's men, and Atli recognizes it among the fallen.
