Niskawaji'j

Niskawaji'j is a girl in her mid teens, roughly fifteen or sixteen years old, with dark hair. The manga presents her as a slight young native of the Vinland coast, one of the Mi'kmaq people the Norse settlers first encounter.

A gentle nature and a restless curiosity define her. Drawn to the healer's craft, she seems to carry a natural gift for it and spends her days at Miskwekepu'j's side as his apprentice. Since the Europeans landed she has been troubled by dreams she takes as warnings of coming grief, yet that unease has not stopped her from reaching across the divide to befriend one of the newcomers.

Born among the Lnu of Vinland, Niskawaji'j trains as the pupil of the shaman Miskwekepu'j and assists him in his work. Her path crosses that of Bug-Eyes, one of the Norse settlers, and the two begin trading words in each other's tongues. What starts as language lessons deepens into genuine closeness, and in time the pair become betrothed. She appears throughout the Vinland Arc, from the first meetings with the natives to the settlement's final chapters. Yukimura's preliminary character notes also cast her as the younger sister of a young warrior of her people.
