Ragnar

A heavyset man past forty, Ragnar wears his years in the deep creases of his face, most of all along the cheeks above a full beard. His scalp is bare on top, with long, curling black hair falling only at the sides, and heavy dark brows sit low over sunken eyes. He holds his expression under tight control, keeping his composure even at the moment of his death; rage is the one thing that undoes that discipline, sending a tremor through his whole body as his hands clench into fists.

Ragnar's affection for Canute runs to the smothering. He fusses over the prince like an anxious parent and bristles the instant anyone speaks ill of the boy, his temper flaring fast in the young royal's defense. Everything in his conduct bends toward keeping Canute safe and holding him in high regard.

Ragnar's service to Canute reaches back to the prince's earliest years, making him a fixture at the young man's side through the campaigns of the War Arc. He first appears amid the fighting around London Bridge and remains Canute's shadow and protector from there. His stretch of living chapters gives way to appearances in memory and vision as the story moves past his death, and the anime revisits him during its second season. Behind him he leaves a younger brother, Gunnar.
