The source marks Vagn out chiefly by his black hair and leaves the rest of his look largely unspecified, presenting him as a seasoned Jomsviking officer without dwelling on further physical detail.

A wary, suspicious streak defines him. Over time he grew convinced that Floki had a hand in the deaths of men who might have risen to lead the Jomsvikings, and rather than swallow that suspicion he acted on it, gathering others into open rebellion. He also proves willing to prod Thorfinn toward vengeance, urging the young man to claim leadership of the order himself.

Vagn hands Thorfinn a damaging revelation: it was Floki who had paid Askeladd to kill Thors. He had stumbled onto the fact after his men seized Atli and forced the information out of him. With that knowledge, he pressed Thorfinn to avenge his father and take the reins of the Jomsvikings.

Floki answered the threat by planting Garm inside Vagn's camp under the guise of a defector. Garm engineered a brawl and struck the commander down on the spot, taking his head almost at once. The killing backfired for Floki, however. Thorkell, dispatched to crush Vagn's forces, was so enraged at being robbed of the fight he had wanted that he swung both his own troops and the surviving rebels against Floki instead.

On the field Vagn showed himself a solid fighter, swinging a large hammer as his weapon of choice, fitting for a man who held rank among the Jomsviking commanders.
