Summary

Recognizing the farm, Gardar reaches out for Arnheid and their son and calls her more beautiful than ever, urging her onto his horse. Snake intervenes, cutting down the animal, pulling Arnheid free, and handing her to Fox. When Gardar attacks in a fury, Einar snatches up his axe to help, but Thorfinn stops him with a single question about whether he could truly kill a man, and Einar falters. Snake, aiming to take the fugitive alive for questioning, dodges every blow, strikes the wound in Gardar's side, and knocks him out. He orders him bound and closely guarded, dismisses a slave's opinion as worthless, and tells Arnheid to forget a husband who has become a maddened runaway.

Unable to sit still, Einar proposes a night rescue, but Arnheid asks him to do nothing and begins to share her past. She confirms she loves Gardar, whose arranged marriage grew tender, and that she lost their son to illness. Her Swedish village once lived quietly until iron was found in a distant marsh and the men, Gardar among them, left to fight over it against her pleading. Weeks later raiders came instead, killing the elders, burning the homes, and seizing the women and her boy Hjalti. She admits Gardar frightened her now, sure his suffering has changed him, yet she intends to protect the child she carries, revealing she is pregnant with Ketil's baby and hoping to raise it in peace. That night she quietly gathers a rag and bucket to tend Gardar's wounds anyway, and Sverkel stops her with his own story: twenty years ago he chose submission over war when a rival named Ebbe threatened his weak village, only for the woman Ketil loved to die when Ebbe's village burned. Sverkel warns that waiting still leaves scars and apologizes that he cannot help her, and Arnheid slips out, promising to return soon.
