Episode 48: Home

Leif's ship reaches the frozen island, and Einar marvels at how short the winter days run. Leif explains that thin pastureland forces many islanders into crafting and fishing rather than herding, facts that surprise even Thorfinn, who left as a small child and can no longer recall his own age. When they arrive at the village, no one knows him, and few even remember that Ylva had a brother. Ylva herself kicks him away and refuses to accept he is anything but a stranger scamming poor Leif, insisting her little brother died long ago.

Only Helga knows him on sight. She cups his head, weeping with joy at how much he has grown, and Thorfinn breaks down apologizing. Ari soon arrives to embrace him, and Helga insists Einar stay too, declaring that any brother of Thorfinn is now her son. When Ylva finally accepts the truth, she strikes her brother down with a demand to know where he has been all these years.

That night Thorfinn recounts sixteen years of hatred, death, and eventual rebirth, from his father's murder to his departure from the farm, and though he speaks plainly the family is left speechless. He confesses his sins weigh heavily and voices his wish to raise a peaceful country in Vinland. Helga backs him fully, likening it to how she and Thors once fled Jomsborg, and Leif pledges to help gather the people, livestock, and money such a venture demands.

Later, Thorfinn visits the grave of the nameless slave his father once bought for eight sheep, and Einar guesses his gentle nature was inherited. Alone in the cold, Thorfinn sees a younger version of himself asking where those who flee the world can go, and Thors touches his shoulder, telling him he already knows the answer, before the two appear together in a vast field of wheat.

Broadcast June 20, 2023, this is the forty-eighth overall episode and the twenty-fourth and final chapter of the season, produced by MAPPA. Kento Matsui directed, sharing storyboard duties with Shuuhei Yabuta, adapting chapters 100 and 101 plus anime-original material. Thors and Askeladd both appear in flashback, closing the Slave arc.
