This Zoan power lets whoever holds it shift into an axolotl, taking either a partial hybrid form or that of the complete animal. It went to Smiley, a slime of poison gas that Caesar Clown built, yet the fruit did not disappear when Smiley perished; instead it re-entered circulation. The name trims down the word salamander, and the VIZ edition brands it the Sala-Sala Fruit, Axolotl Model. Once Smiley was gone, the power took the guise of an apple because a sack of apples happened to sit close by, appearing as a compact, swirl-marked orb in a deep indigo shade with a curling stem.

Being a Zoan, the fruit lets its bearer become an axolotl, an amphibious cousin of the salamander. Real axolotls stay tiny, but Smiley bloated to an enormous scale many times a person's size, and whether the power confers any fighting strength has never been made clear. It still saddles the user with the standard Devil Fruit penalty of no longer being able to swim, an odd mismatch against the axolotl's water-dwelling, amphibious nature, which leaves open the question of whether living beings can wield it at all or only lifeless hosts. Smiley mostly used the ability to get around and to reshape itself for the moment, and its awareness survived inside any fragment torn from the main mass, each broken-off piece thinking and reacting on its own after being flung across the Punk Hazard lake.

Smiley, the drifting gas-slime, served as the fruit's user. A year past the Punk Hazard incident, Caesar came back to the lab, packed H2S gas into a slime, and fed it this fruit to bring Smiley into being. When Caesar staged his Shinokuni demonstration and Smiley was destroyed in the process, the fruit took shape once more inside a nearby apple, marking the first time in the story that such a power reappeared after its user had died, reborn atop an ordinary piece of produce as its base. The anime adds a wrinkle: the sled hauling the reborn fruit was dissolved by the H2S poison seeping from Smiley's remains.
