Calculation governs Jörg more than cruelty ever does. Every situation passes through a ledger in his head, and he keeps one eye fixed on how the laboring classes perceive him, suppressing his greedier instincts whenever indulging them would look bad while feeling no guilt about having them. The night after Quinta is cut off with half its population inside, what actually troubles his sleep is not the people trapped among Titans but the art he abandoned there, left behind because carting it out would have made a poor impression.

As a father he is rigid and controlling, going so far as to have the military watch his son's movements. Mathias suspects Jörg would never bless a marriage to Rita Iglehaut, since the heir to the household is expected to wed for influence or rank. And though Jörg counts among the wealthiest men to come out of Quinta, he declines to spend that power on any cause that holds no personal interest for him.

On the first morning after the evacuation to Fuerth District, Jörg gathers important delegates of the local merchant associations and the royal government at his townhouse. Mathias bursts in demanding a rescue expedition for Quinta, and Jörg answers that mobilizing one touches too many interests and sits beyond his influence, an answer his son refuses to believe. He offers what comfort he can, arguing that a breach in Wall Maria does not doom Quinta itself, but he will not reveal the countermeasures under discussion, and he rebukes his son's loss of composure and interference. Nor is he blind to the reason for the outburst, knowing how much Rita Iglehaut, still inside the sealed city, means to his son.

That evening he admits privately to Suzanne that he understands the boy, and that he too would return to Quinta if returning were possible. People matter more than possessions, he concedes, yet the pull he actually feels is sentimental attachment to the artworks left behind, a small portion of a collection whose bulk sits safely stored in the interior.
