Ms. Springer

Character

Connie Springer's mother becomes living proof of the Titans' true nature. Transformed by Zeke Yeager during the gassing of Ragako, her stunted Titan lies pinned atop the family home, yet she still whispers a welcome to her son, a clue that leads Hange Zoë to a horrifying conclusion.

First Appearance (Manga): Chapter 37: Southwestward

Appearance

The family portrait shows a woman of advancing age, her amber eyes bright, her wrinkles mild, her dark blonde hair gathered into a formal bun, dressed in a light, short-collared gown and holding a humble, muted expression, her large pale eyes slightly sunken with age. Her Titan is a grotesque inversion of that composure: an enormous head with a gaping mouth and huge amber eyes sits atop a triangular, thin-skinned torso where the ribs press through, several of them exposed outright. Arms and legs far too small and frail to bear her weight leave her sprawled permanently where she transformed, hair flipped upward from the resting position, her body crushing the house she once kept.

Personality

Calm modesty comes through her portrait, but the Titan wearing her face looks strangely enthusiastic. What sets her apart from nearly every Pure Titan is the will she keeps buried inside it; watching Connie ride away from the ruined village, she forces her frozen body to rasp out a broken greeting of welcome home, relief at her son's survival cutting through the curse.

History

Before the Wall Rose invasion, Marleyan soldiers gas Ragako and Zeke Yeager turns its people into Pure Titans. Ms. Springer's Titan emerges deformed, its limbs useless, leaving her stranded and immobile on the wreckage of her own home. Connie, patrolling Wall Rose with the Survey Corps, detours to the village to check on his family and finds the creature lying there; his comrades persuade him his family may have fled, and only as he departs does the Titan mutter its greeting, shocking him.

Once Wall Rose is cleared, Connie and Hange Zoë return to study her. Comparing the Titan's face against the family portrait, Hange is struck by the resemblance, and the match becomes a pillar of the theory that every Titan was once a human being. Connie visits her again shortly before the Corps departs to retake Wall Maria.

Years later, during Marley's assault on the island, Connie kidnaps the newly transformed Jaw Titan inheritor Falco Grice, planning to feed the boy to his mother and restore her humanity. Armin Arlert foils him at Ragako by offering himself instead, forcing Connie to save his friend and abandon the scheme; Connie also realizes she would only have suffered from inheriting the Colossus Titan. Her release finally comes when Eren dies at Mikasa Ackerman's hand and every Pure Titan reverts to human form. Three years after the Rumbling, Historia Reiss shelters her along with Jean's family. She is the second Pure Titan ever shown to speak meaningful words, after the Talking Titan.
