Opening

Three military branches pour out of Wall Rose to recover Eren, with Erwin arranging a long-range scouting formation aimed at the Forest of Giant Trees. Hange, too injured to ride, reluctantly sends Moblit to Ragako in their place to examine the Titan discovered at Conny's home.

High in the forest canopy, Eren wakes missing both arms, torn from his Titan too roughly by Reiner. Ymir, regrowing her own limbs beside him, stops his reflexive attempt to transform: injured shifters cannot change, Titans prowl below, and their captors hold the only ODM gear. Reiner explains they will move for his hometown at nightfall, once everyone's strength returns and the Titans go dormant. Eren silently weighs escape scenarios and resolves to bury his rage and gather information instead.

Then Reiner's behavior turns strange. He chats about promotions as though still a soldier of the Walls, thanks Ymir for the cannon find at Utgard, and muses about Christa's feelings for him. Bertholdt, alarmed, reminds him that they are Warriors. The correction rips Reiner back to a suppressed memory: pinning Marco down during the fight for Trost and letting a Titan devour him while Annie and Bertholdt wept. Ymir names what she is seeing, a mind split in two by years of living as both humanity's defender and its destroyer, with each persona blind to the other. Eren demands to know what the pair felt when he once described his mother's death in the attack they caused; Bertholdt answers that his sorrow was real. Eren strips them of any claim to humanity and promises them the most agonizing deaths he can devise. Ymir redirects the conversation to the ape-like Titan from Utgard, guessing that finding this Beast Titan is the Warriors' ticket home, and floats the possibility that killing Reiner and Bertholdt would solve nothing. Reiner counters by inviting Ymir to defect for Christa's sake. Signal flares suddenly bloom on the horizon: the rescue force has come far faster than expected, an hour before sunset.

A combined force of Scouts, Garrison, and Military Police departs Wall Rose to recover Eren, while Moblit rides for Ragako in Hange's stead.

Eren wakes as a double amputee in the Forest of Giant Trees, unable to transform while healing and stripped of his ODM gear.

Reiner's soldier persona surfaces mid-conversation, and the memory of feeding Marco Bodt to a Titan exposes how deeply his identity has fractured; Ymir diagnoses the split aloud.

Ymir theorizes the Beast Titan orchestrated the recent Titan outbreak and that reaching it is Reiner and Bertholdt's route home, while the identity of humanity's true enemy stays unanswered.

Reiner offers Ymir a place with the Warriors, arguing Christa would be safer with them, just as Scout signal flares announce the rescue force ahead of schedule.

This is the 9th episode of season 2 and the 34th Attack on Titan episode overall, produced by Wit Studio and Production I.G. It aired in Japan on May 27, 2017 and in the United States on June 25, 2017, adapting the Clash of the Titans arc chapters Opening, Children, and The World They Saw.

Yoshihide Ibata directed and Yasuko Kobayashi wrote the episode, framed by the opening Opfert eure Herzen! and the ending Yuugure no Tori. Its informational segment covers Titan regeneration: shifters can lose limbs and organs yet fully regrow them over time so long as they survive. The Hunters comes before it and Children after.
