While gallows rise in the streets, Erwin Smith stands before the throne and lays out his case: should Wall Rose ever fall again, depleted stockpiles mean the refugees and the residents of Wall Sina would tear each other apart over food. Reclaiming Wall Maria through the Scout Regiment is the only path that avoids that war. The nobles brush the argument aside, citing his repeated refusal to surrender Eren Jaeger as a breach of the Charter of Humanity, and Dot Pyxis publicly disavows any Garrison alignment with the Scouts. Erwin's death sentence is pronounced on the spot.

Before he can be led out, Anka Rheinberger storms in shouting that the Colossal and Armored Titans have smashed through Calaneth District and Wall Rose is lost. Pyxis moves to organize an evacuation, but Aurille overrides him and orders the gates of Wall Sina sealed, condemning everyone outside them. Nile Dawk refuses to carry out the order, declaring himself a human of Wall Rose, and Premier Dhalis Zachary arrives with armed soldiers to back him. The breach, Zachary reveals, never happened; the report was Pyxis's trap, and the nobles walked into it. With the Interior Police already restrained, the military declares its coup, arrests the nobility, and moves to crown a ruler from the true royal line. Erwin, freed, admits the victory unsettles him: humanity has stepped onto a more dangerous road than the one it left.

That night, Hange Zoë and Moblit Berner bring Squad Levi news of the coup's success and of newspapers finally printing the truth, thanks to Flegel Reeves. Hange also carries Erwin's file on the Reiss family: five years ago, on the very day Wall Maria fell, bandits supposedly burned the family's chapel with everyone but Rod Reiss inside, yet the stone building was wrecked with impossible force and Rod quietly rebuilt it with his own money. Squad Levi sets out to investigate. Beneath that same chapel, Eren wakes chained and gagged in a glittering crystal cavern, dreaming of a dark-haired girl, as Historia Reiss approaches in a white robe.

Erwin defends the Scout Regiment's existence before the King and is condemned to death under the Charter of Humanity.

A fabricated report of Wall Rose falling exposes the nobles' readiness to sacrifice half the population; Nile Dawk defies the order to seal the gates.

Zachary and Pyxis reveal the deception and carry out a bloodless coup d'état, arresting the assembly and the false King.

Zachary confesses to Erwin that he acted out of long-nurtured hatred for the government, and presses Erwin to admit his own selfish motive.

Hange shares Erwin's dossier on the Reiss chapel fire, pointing Squad Levi toward the rebuilt chapel.

Eren regains consciousness restrained in a crystal cave beneath the chapel, where Historia comes to face him.

Reply is the fifth episode of season three and the 42nd overall, produced by Wit Studio and Production I.G. It condenses material from the chapters Smoke Signal, Reply, and Sin, directed by Komuro Mirai and written by Yasuko Kobayashi.

It premiered in Japan on August 20, 2018, and in the United States on September 22, 2018, framed by the opening "Red Swan" and the ending "Requiem der Morgenröte".
