Ymir hurls herself from Utgard's tower into the horde below, tearing into one Titan after another with claws and teeth. Each kill is interrupted by a fresh attacker; she blinds one with a swipe and narrowly spins clear of a fast Titan that slams into the castle instead of her. The impact nearly throws Krista from the tower, and Reiner seizes her ankle, gripping so hard in his daze that she cries out until Connie snaps him back to himself. Staring at her, Reiner asks whether she knew her friend could transform. Krista denies it, insisting that after three years of friendship she cannot accept what she is seeing.

Reiner and Bertolt begin branding Ymir a traitor for hiding what she knew about the Titans, while Connie observes that, unlike Eren, she seems in full control of her power and wonders whose side she is on. Below, the swarm grinds Ymir down. Ready to drop away rather than bring the tower down on her friends, she instead hears Krista shout that the tower does not matter and that she should smash it if that is what survival takes. Ymir wrecks the structure over the Titans, gathering the recruits onto her head and leaping free as it collapses.

The survivors barely catch their breath before the remaining Titans converge again, ripping Ymir apart as she kills one more. Realizing she never told her friend her real name, Krista sprints toward the feeding frenzy; a Titan lunges for her and Mikasa cuts it down as the Survey Corps arrives in force, with Eren making his first kill as a soldier despite orders to withdraw. As the stunned soldiers absorb the revelation of Ymir's nature, Hange notes her missing arm and leg. Kneeling over the fading Ymir, Krista finally speaks her true name, Historia, and Ymir smiles before losing consciousness.

Ymir's identity as an intelligent Titan is exposed to the recruits and, soon after, to the Survey Corps. Reiner and Bertolt privately mark her as a traitor for concealing knowledge of the Titans, while Connie notes she commands her power far better than Eren does.

At Krista's urging, Ymir collapses Utgard's tower onto the Titan horde and carries the recruits to safety, at the cost of being swarmed and maimed, losing an arm and a leg before help arrives.

Mikasa saves Krista from a lunging Titan, Eren records his first kill as a soldier, and the Survey Corps clears the field. Krista abandons her false identity and tells Ymir her real name is Historia.

Beginning with this chapter, vertical maneuvering equipment is drawn with four blade sheaths per side instead of six, matching the anime's design. The chapter titles of this stretch form a deliberate pair: "Ymir" precedes it and centers her past, while this one closes on the moment its own title is spoken aloud.

Published January 9, 2013 in Japan and at the end of that year in the United States, this is the third chapter of volume 10 within the Clash of the Titans arc. It is adapted in the anime episode "Historia" and leads into the chapter "Warrior".
