Memories of the Future

Zeke cannot square what the memories show him. Grisha raised Eren without a shred of the indoctrination Zeke endured, yet Eren still chose to carry out the old man's plans. Eren answers plainly that nothing made him this way; he has fought since birth. Watching the young Eren cut down two of Mikasa's kidnappers, he tells his brother the difference between them: Zeke defines himself by rejecting a father who died long ago, which makes him that dead man's slave.

The brothers then witness the night everything pivots. After promising his son a look at the basement, Grisha is struck by a vision of Shiganshina's evacuation, a memory that has not happened yet. It drives him to the chapel and down to the cavern where the Reiss family has gathered. He begs Frieda, keeper of the Founding Titan, to wipe out the Titans breaching the Wall. Speaking with the First King's will, she refuses; in her telling, Eldians must accept judgment for their ancestors' sins and die where they stand.

Grisha resolves to steal the Founder and sever the royal line, but his scalpel slips from a trembling hand. A doctor, he sobs, cannot murder children. Then Eren steps forward through the memory itself.

Glaring at his kneeling father, Eren demands he stand and remember what brought him underground: Faye devoured by dogs, Dina, Kruger, every Restorationist who died for the cause. Vengeance requires moving forward, in death and beyond it, because Grisha is the one who began this story. The words work. Grisha drives the blade through his own hand, transforms, and kills the Reiss family; only Rod escapes.

Afterward, a broken Grisha senses Zeke's presence across time. He warns that the future belongs to Eren's design, embraces the son he neglected, says he loves him, and pleads with Zeke to stop his brother.

Back in the paths, Zeke grasps the full horror: Eren engineered the Founder's theft, and the tour through Grisha's memories, Zeke's own idea, is what let him do it. Eren adds that kissing Historia's hand four years earlier first opened this window into his father's mind and his own future. Rattled, Zeke shouts his command to Ymir Fritz: strip every Subject of Ymir of the ability to bear children. The girl turns toward the Coordinate. Eren tears free of his shackles by ripping off both thumbs and gives chase while Zeke insists nothing can stop her.

The chapter belongs to the War for Paradis arc, running between A Fleeting Moment and From You, 2,000 Years Ago. It was published September 9, 2019 in Japan, with the English simulpub a day earlier, and shares its title with the anime episode adapting it; the material also spills into the following adaptation, From You, 2,000 Years Ago.

The installment confirms the Attack Titan's defining power in practice: its bearers receive the memories of future inheritors, letting Eren reach backward and script events he has already lived. Frieda never saw the theft coming because the First King's vow kept her from the Founder's full sight.

The chapter quote is Eren's speech through the paths urging Grisha toward revenge, the exact moment the son becomes the author of the father's crime.
