Summary

The chase after the Armored Titan continues across the open plain. Seeing Titans stream out of the forest behind his forces, Erwin Smith orders the soldiers to let the creatures follow, brushing off a Military Police officer's accusation that he is using troops as bait again. Riding hard, Armin calculates that Reiner could gain speed by shedding armor at his joints, while Mikasa coldly declares she will cut down Reiner and Bertolt without hesitation, and Ymir too should she interfere.

Freed from Ymir's jaws, Historia demands answers. Ymir tells her there is no future behind the Walls and urges her to defect with them, then drops the pretense: she grabbed Historia not for Historia's sake but for her own. The power she carries was stolen from Reiner and Bertolt's people, and handing over Historia may be the bargaining chip that keeps her alive. Terrified of dying, Ymir begs for help, and Historia answers that her place is at Ymir's side no matter what comes.

Eren regains consciousness just as the pursuers arrive. Hannes's blades glance uselessly off the Armored Titan's plating, and Mikasa slashes Ymir, sparing her only because Historia shields her. Jean appeals to the years the traitors spent among the 104th, but Mikasa dismisses any need to understand their reasons, calling them a plague to be exterminated. The words break Bertolt. Screaming, he admits their crimes are beyond forgiveness yet insists his time in the corps was no lie, and he wails for someone to find them. Even Mikasa falters. His plea for Eren's return refused, the standoff shatters when Hannes shouts a warning: Erwin is bearing down on them with an enormous horde of Titans at his back.

Notes

The Japanese title is 誰か (Dareka), meaning "someone," drawn from Bertolt's anguished plea, one of the first cracks in the Warriors' facade and an early signal that the trio see themselves as trapped rather than villainous.

The anime adapts this chapter within the episode Charge.

Historia's promise to stand with Ymir regardless of circumstance supplies the chapter's epigraph and cements the bond that shapes both characters' arcs going forward.
